I let time get away from me (zone 5a). Already had first frost.
I have lots of daylilies and other plants to get in the ground and I was wondering if anyone had tried to overwinter prennials in straw bales?
Also thought about making a square out of bales, putting some dirt in the bottom, then sitting the pots inside the opening of the square and filling the square with soil up to the top of the pot.
Any opinions? I know this is different but........
overwintering plants in straw bales
If you do that you need to mulch around the tops of the plants, above the pots also. I.e. pine needles, straw, whatever you have in your area. I see nothing wrong with your idea.
Guess it depends on how big a square you mean, and how cold it gets in your area.

We can go down below 0. We are the same zone, so I am guessing we have the same range of temps.
You are probably right on thinking how big I make the square, didn't think of that.
Thank you.
