There's No Place Like Home

Cocoa, FL(Zone 9a)

I found this little guy roosting at the top of my covered entryway in the southwest corner at the top of the pilar. The first night I noticed him he was already asleep with his tail toward me and didn't even move when my husband or myself opened the front door, closed it, or even when my husband took these pitures of him/her. I was worried at first thinking that he was a Nut-Hatcher, but turns out that isn't what this little guy is. This little guy, who is all of maybe 4 inches long, is a Marsh Wren. Hope you enjoy the picture :)

What a nice, protected nest site! How fun to have a "resident" bird.

It really is, he's been nesting there now for the past 4 days. He sleeps through the night and then at first light leaves his "nest" to go foraging for food and do whatever, little Marsh Wrens do.. lol

Here's one that was taken yesterday (Oct. 4th) after he had gone to sleep for the night

Silver, Those are sweet!

I'd say a Carolina Wren - the bill is too long for Marsh Wren, and it doesn't have the back pattern a Marsh Wren has.

He's adorable and it's wonderful that you'll be able to watch him every day.

So cute and snug!! I had a Carolina roost in the garage all last winter. I just love Wrens, they have tons of personality!

Thank you Pelletory

Resin,

I believe you're right, I had looked at the Carolina Wren, but it didn't seem to fit at first due to the white spots that you can see when he's all fluffed out sleeping. My husband and I have both tried to get better pictures of his back so that we could better determine his species, but the little bugger is extremely quick. By the time our camera got done going through it's auto focus routine (a feature we are not able to turn off) he'd already flown off to a new spot to sit, watch, and more than likely laugh like mad at us for even trying to get a decent picture of him.. lol However, going back through the pictures you're right in that he doesn't have the small pattern area on the back that the Marsh Wrens have and his beak is too long. I can say this is the first time I've seen Carolina Wrens where I live on the Coast Of Central Florida, and I would expect to see a Marsh Wren before a Carolina Wren due to my living practically in the Marsh next to the St. Johns River 10 mins from the southern enterance to the Kennedy Space Center.

Either way, the little buggers are interesting to watch and now we have 2 of them roosting off the back porch I don't know if one of them is the same one from the front entryway or not but if it is he/she has found themselves a mate and are happily roosting off our back porch now. Of course, in the mornings one of the loves to sit on the window ledge next to the front door in the mornings to eat the mosquitos that are still buzzing around from the night before. Here's a couple of pictures of the 2 that are sleeping in the electrical box next to the back porch door:

Here's another picture of the 2 wrens that are sleeping just outside of our back porch in the electrical box from the 7th. This picture is from my vantage point, needless to say all I can see are their tails sticking out of the box.

Adorable. Maybe you should get some mealworms for them!

I had a couple take over a hanging basket every year.......even after I bought them a house. The year that I didn't put up a hanging basket, they skipped the 2 houses that I had and nested in the window box of the treehouse next door. (the girls were so excited by that!) They are very "personable" little birds and make a fun addition to the family. I'll warn you tho', the babies are a bit messy with all of their poo.
