I germinated some pride of barbados - the ordinary orange kind this spring and grew them in the greenhouse till it warmed up here in Washington. The best and only survivor of the lot grew only 3 inches. Everything I've read about them says they grow like mad. Is it just the lack of very hot weather that's kept them small? Anyone have any tips on how to get the baby bigger next year?
pride of barbados - not so proud
did you test your soil? what mix are you using? maybe they need the humidity....my poor things don't get water till I see the leaves droop..lol.. but as babies...don't keep them wet only moist...I found that my seeds rot..

They do OK without humidity, I've seen people in AZ posting that they grow them so that must not be critical. Did you fertilize them? And what size pot were they in? You never want to over-pot something, but I've found with seedlings that if I'm slow to pot them up to the next size their growth will stall until I move them to a pot that gives them a little more room. But on the other hand if you pot them up too fast, then they spend all their time growing roots to fill the bigger pot and not putting out top growth.
Hi,
they grow well here in AZ. The hotter the weather is the faster they grow. I am sure they don't need much humidity or too much water. They prefer dry and hot conditions.
