What IS this Fungus????

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

My husband came across this very strange fungus after all our rain. It looks so weird. He came across another that looked exactly like a male body part....I kid you not. I would post the pic but I worried that Dave would throw me out for it. What is this stuff???

You might post it over on the ferns and fungi forum or the plant identification thread. Mention that it is a double post. They can identify it quickly for you. Very cool looking. They aren't harmful.

Thanks

The one in the picture is a stinkhorn - Clathrus columnatus.

The one that looks like an *ahem* male body part is probably another fungus in the stinkhorn group, from the genus Phallus. Yes, that's the name of the genus, appropriate, no?

Yep.....those are the ones!

I've never seen such crazy fungus as grows in the mulch we use.

That is the stinky squid stinkhorn fungus. It starts off looking like an egg and then hatches into those little monsters. I know....I incubated them in my kitchen until it was discovered what they were. There's an old thread on the wildlife forum, somewhere.

I had a pine cut down last yr. Is sprouted all around where they took out the stump. My yard stunk so bad I hated to walk out to the street for the mail.
now know what I had now. Yep the eggs were weird too.

Oh heavens...I get them all over here and there...they don't really hurt anything do they? I've never thought anything of them. Just yank them out and pitch them. I've lurked this board for ever but, worried because they are in my veggy bed especially since the rains started after the drought. I have never heard they were a big deal though.

Hugs,

Jamie

Thank you for letting me know because I just reach down an pull them out. I don't have them in new beds just my old ones that were here when I moved here but, I edible landscape and I just got a start when someone questioned them...sometimes I think I might not worry enough...lol...

Hugs,

Jamie
