Using a rotary cutter

I am planning to do some craft projects that would involve lots of cutting. As my fingers are stiff, I was considering the rotary blades that the shows on fashion design use.
Does anyone have experience using these? How many layers of cotten (quilt/blouse type thick) can it cut at a time.?
How at risk are my fingers??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
