Fleming Island Jewel

Watertown, NY

I first saw a picture of this one about 5 years ago. I was instantly in love. It is a very rare and slow growing brugmansia. For such a small plant it has huge leaves and blossoms. She was worth the wait.

Brenda, It's gorgeous. I love that longish calx and nice long tendrils. It's hard to get a good perspective from the photos, but are the blooms a smaller size? My only experience with a slow growing Brug has been with Sam and I've managed to kill 3 of them. I think from overwatering them. Does the slow growth in a Brug mean a greater vulnerability to overwatering due to the size of the rootball which I assume is probably slow growing as well. Or does the root system form tubers that prevent the roots from forming a dense rootball? It would be interesting to find out where the slow growing trait came from.

You have done a fantastic job of overcoming difficulties associated with growing slow Brugs. I hope you'll share more photos of her as she grows ahd has bigger flushes. Congratulations!

Wow what a beauty.............

Jewel is not slow growing, just a very small plant, with huge flowers and leaves. She will be spending next summer in a large hanging basket. I will be years before this one will be available I think. As far as I know right now there are only 3 or 4 plants in the US and it takes so long for her to get big enough to get a cutting from.

Part of getting hooked on these plants has to be culling those that do not preform. We all keep wanting everything new that comes along. In order to keep getting new ones we have to elimination those that don't measure up.

Brenda
you are sooo right, I am learning that the hard way, oh well, now I know better, if it doesn't Bloom the first year I am not keeping it

Now, be careful, I do hold some over the second year. I would not have this beautiful Jewel plant if I had done that.

You all are so right. My noids seemed to perform the best this year. Go figure, lol. I am keeping all of mine again in hopes that we have better weather next year and others will bloom more. This one is a real beauty and certainly worth the wait.
