Congrats on the bananas! I would love to be able to get mine to bloom, but I live in the hill Country of TX in zone 8a, so we get freezes here. I wrap them, but the tops die back. I will try to get some bananas to bloom in my greenhouse. I have Musa envie!

Are these edible? My neighbor across the fence has tons of these menaces. All of the bananas are hanging in my yard.

Yes, an engineer that I work with owns older trees than mine and he has already brought in some for us to try. Compared to what we buy in stores, they are shorter, fatter and taste wonderful! Better than store bought.

This has been a fun project. I moved this tree 3 times before leaving it alone. Luckily in this Florida soil, that is easy to do - except for the weight of the plant.

It has several pups around the base that I'll either move or hit em with some herbiside. According to that website it will get rid of any you don't want to dig up - easily - and said to rub some on the leaves to keep it from hitting the mother plant.

I have been taking pictures of this bloom weekly, as it develops more baby bananas. And keeping my fingers crossed that our warm weather continues for a while.

When I ordered seeds through a catalog it was the great folks at banana.org that told we what to do and that was in March of this year, I had to bring her in due to the winter coming so here's how she looks today.

P.S Do you have pics in the gallery over there??

That is a great idea, I haven't put any pictures into the gallery. Since my banana plant was given to me I have no identification for it (so she is a NOID - no ID). What kind of seeds did you order, because mine looks like yours. I have babies if you ever get to NW FL.

Congrats, Youngbb.

There were home-grown bananas in my smoothie this am and what a treat. Another couple of days they will be sweeter than honey.

Now about those 'pups'. If you kill them, you won't have anymore bananas. Once the stalk flowers, it dies. DEAD. That means no goodies next year.

Good Luck,

Hap

The pack only said Ornamental ensete ventricosum, which doesnt tell which variety it is LOL... I havent bothered to find out what she is so mine is a NOID too :>)

Hey Hap, I can't wait, I love smoothies and banana pudding too! I was out there checking it out again yesterday and giving her some additional water. I really like the looks of the group so I won't touch them, except to give a pup away but I don't want to disturb it now.
Thanks Jasminesmom, I am going to look that up. It sure looks like the kind I have.
