Expanding the garden - v - Burmuda Grass

Charlotte, NC(Zone 7b)

Hubby and I started tackling the next 600 sq. ft. of Burmuda Grass over the weekend. Got half of it removed - the other half will hopefully be out this coming weekend. What a chore! I gave the grassy clumps to my neighbor for her front yard, she had a lot of bare spots.

This area has a 10 ft length against my other neighbor's fence - great for next spring's crop of Wando peas. When the peas are done, I'll set sweet potato slips as they seem to be the only thing that can compete with Burmuda grass and win! There are bound to be some grass roots left, and even one teeny tiny bit will grow.

Update - It rained some over the weekend, so hubby and I didn't finish the area - but there's only one small patch of grass left.

One great thing happened! I lost three pounds! YAY another seven to go!

wow.. how many peas are you putting in there? ... someday someone will come up with a bermuda grass recipe..

I've had good luck planting Elbon rye in the fall, then a couple of crops of Buckwheat in the summer. Takes up a year of growing space but, gets rid of the bermuda grass.

The fence line is about ten feet long - that's where the peas will go - farmerdill said to set the seeds around Valentine's Day - so I'm going to try that.

The rest of the area will go to sweet potatoes. By the time the sweets go in, the peas should be about done.

I'm going to put cantaloupes or watermelons in the area where the sweets were this year.

That is a good idea with the peas and potato, I managed to get some good sweet potatoes in ct.. . I havn't had a lot of experience with peas, other than snap - but am looking forward to trying but need the room, i may be able to do the same. What kind of peas do you plant?

Did you ever get the plot finished?

jjconcepts - Hubby and I are English - so I plant English Peas :)

There is a small plot of B-grass still to dig out. It's roughly twenty five square feet - so we should get it out of there tomorrow (Sat). Hubby has to dig-out a small bush first - hopefully he's doing that now (while I am at work).

Then I'll re-dig the whole area again to get all the small roots - 'cause if I don't they'll start to re-grow. (grrr). After that, I'll rake the area level, and spread a thick layer of leaves.

Before next spring, I'll order some coconut coir - hopefully Boca Bob still has some - and form a raised bed for the sweet potatoes, and another for the peas against the fence.
