Kenboy I just purchased 2 brugs from Country Gardens which I had planned to plant in the ground this fall. Will they overwinter ok here in zone 8? Yours are looking great!Dennis

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

dennist, never plant a tender plant in the ground in the Fall, keep them through the Winter and plant in the Spring. It will not have time to get settled in before the cold gets here. Some Brugs Winter over better than others. I had five Naughty Nicks last year and only one came back and it is not in good shape, even though it is a very vigorous grower. Which ones did you get?

Bandera, TX

I have some brugs in large pots, which I left outside in Bandera. They died to the ground but came back just fine. I will put them in my new greenhouse this year and keep them going.

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

What zone is Bandera ?

Marquez, TX(Zone 8b)

kenboy, thanks for the advise. Will pot them up and keep protected over winter. I have an Esmerelda and a Rhapsody.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I went out in the rain (my excuse for fuzziness) to snap this before the wind picks up and they all blow away. It's TX Pink from Gordon Hawk.
We can actually hear some of the ACL Concert about 5(?) miles away! Must be a weather inversion....or they're just loud this year. Kinda cool.....

Hey, BB! Is that a Mickey Mouse up there in your first pix? If so, what kind of steriods have you got that plant on? lol
:~)

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I used some Messenger on everything. And I dose 'em with fish emulsion. They didn't jump till we started getting some rain.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

My Dorthea was blooming when I left Thursday! I hope the plant is still there when I get back. I'm just so glad to be getting some rain.

I love the color and the long, long tendrils on this one.

Kenboy, Katie's Sweet Sixteen is beautiful! It's on my wish list. My Autumn Treasure made it throught the grasshopper invasion without much damage. I hope to see it get big enough to bloom next year.

bettydee, Dorthea was named by a friend of mine and fellow Texan (Pete) for his wife and is a pod sister to Wild and Crazy. W&C was named for the way the long tendrils just go everywhere. Pete crossed the two once but I don't know if he ever got any pods. Katie's Sweet Sixteen was a Brinda Delph cross ( DJ's Can Can Girl X Jamie's Monkey Business ) that was grown out by Joan Cook of Tyler and was named for her Grandchild. We had a team where Joan would sprout the seeds and we would grow the seedlings out but this one Joan did all by herself. We took large cuttings after it bloomed the first year and planted it where it gets lots of sun. She holds up much better than most. I believe Joan sent Brenda a start but she shut her nursery down soon after, so we are probably the only ones that have it going now. We were planing on offering it this next Spring. We lost our Dorthea so I would gladly trade you for a KSS.

That's a gorgeous color on Dorthea. And Veronica, ...I tried to call you Friday to see when you're coming to Austin!

I have a brug question for one of you..... Someone sent me a cutting a few yrs ago named Orange Custard. It finally bloomed this week in all the rain and it looked pink. I figured I had switched tags, but the blooms do look pale orange today. I tried to look it up on a brug site, but for some reason it's not easy to navigate. Is there such a named brug?

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

I have never heard of it.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Sandi, I wasn't home on Friday. I'm in Vicksburg, MS spending a week with my DH. To do that I had to get a pet sitter and a neighbor to look in on the cows. I have my cell phone with me though. Would getting together Thursday, Oct 22 work for you. Also if I go on a day I'm not tied down on a doctor's visit, we might be able to arrange a better time. I found Orange Custard listed on the Brugmansia Register, but just the name and nothing else and the name in italics means it has been mentioned on the Internet, but nothing else is known about it. From who did you get it? And where did they get it. If from e-Bay, sometimes you don't get what you pay for.

Ken, I would love to trade with you, but would you mind a somewhat smallish cutting. I bought Dorthea in early summer and she is only about 2-1/2' tall. I could send you one of the blooming branches you see in the this link or a mature 6" - 8" branch that is part of the original cutting.

Or if you don't mind waiting a few weeks, the branches in the photo should be bigger by then. I will be back home on Thursday and I can measure the length of the green blooming branches as well as the mature one. Let me know if you want either one or want to wait until the branches are larger.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Well I'll have to try to find out who sent it. Thanks for cking. I kept getting a pop-up after I accessed one of the unmentionable sites.
And the 22nd is fine for your visit, or any other weekday in Oct. If another day will work better for you, let me know. Depends on whether you want to go nursery shopping also. D-mail me when you get home and we can decide. BTW, what are you doing on the computer? You should be out enjoying the sites!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I just found a post from Pollygardening way back in Oct, 06. She was offering brug cuttings of Orange Custard and noted that it was her seedling and had not been registered. The photo does not quite look like the color I have. And her's is a bush and mine is a tree... Someone will want to share it this winter, tho, I'd guess....

Woolly Butterfly Bush blooming this morning. Not sure why it's called butterfly bush as it doesn't attract butterflies much at all. I've got some of those reddish ones also...might show a bit in this photo, maybe not. But don't remember what it's called at the moment.

Bettydee!! If you are still in Vicksburg and feel like eating out; DH and I have a great place to recommend.
El Sombrero Mexican Restaurant is on the south side of the Interstate, sets off a bit and is well lit at night. During the day it is real colorful with faux palms in the landscape. Exact address is 110 Cypress Center Dr. They have really put a lot into decoration of the interior as well as the outside. The colorful tile work is all through the restaurant, even in the restrooms!! The food was very good and fresh also. We were there in August and will definately go back when passing that way again.

And a single happy Batface Cuphea! Many plants are celebrating the rains we've had. If they could sing, it would be a happy song!

That's it! That's what I have also. It has been there for years, so hard to remember the name.

I grow the purple amaranth, its similar. I love all the pics of the brugs but after reading some of the posts I am not sure I will buy any next spring. Planning on bringing in the one I bought this fall to see if I can keep it going this winter in low light conditions of my house. I am impressed with the flowers and the smell. The large moths it attracts are an extra bonus. Might do some research and find one that is heat tolerant and hardier.

I have 8 of them, but only know a few of their names and the only one that is starting to bloom is the Rosa Trauma.
