I thought this was an interesting chicken. They claim they lay dark brown eggs similar to marans, but they have white earlobes, um, not the eggs, but the chickens.

I also saw some pictures of dorkings today. They are lovely roosters, raised by the Romans, and supposedly have a really nice tasting meat. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=dorking+chicken&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g7g-m3

Both of these breeds are rare. It's a sad sad thing to think that so many of these chicken breeds have become totally extinct.

In my area there is an endangered species called the Lesser Prairie Chicken. The government is paying people not to graze certain areas at certain times of the year, to try and preserve them. Some say it's rather dangerous to apply for programs like that. In the future with all the strange laws they are passing, it could prevent you from controlling your own property.

I wonder if you could get the eggs for the Lesser Prairie Chicken and hatch them out, or if that's forbidden.

Big No No Light if they fall under the Migratory act. I have Federal Permit Papers for my Whistling Duck and the Wood Ducks I gave away. Not allowed to do anything with any Native North American birds without Federal Permit. And catching them in the wild is a serious offense

Well you would think that if they want to preserve them, they would allow us to raise them, but you are probably right. Thank you for the information.

I found this website and it has an audio of the sounds they make. http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Lesser_Prairie-Chicken/id I'll have to listen closely the next time I go out there and see if I recognize it. The last time I was there I heard lots of strange bird calls. I can recognize the Bob White, and that's about all. It's easy because it says it's name, "bob white, bob white". :D Well, it does.

Which is why we must ALL get them. And breed them. Lots of them.

More chickens.....

Catmad you need to change your nic to ChickenMad. :D I agree though, totally. I have silkie babies due to hatch today or tomorrow. If I could, I'd have tons of chickens of all breeds. Maybe in the millenium I can do just that. For now, I can enjoy what I have and get busy on some chicken tractors for these babies.

{g}. I have more cats living here than chickens. That was beginning to change, but 8 new felines have decided that this is the place to live. Sigh.

Of course, if the incubator works, the balance will shift.....

Catmad, I have wild chickens (not quality or endangered breed chickens) that come out of the woods for the cracked corn I feed them. I hung a garden hose in a tree, pointed on/over the corn. The cats learned quickly that it suddenly rains if they bother the chickens! The two cats just look. haha. I turn on the garden hose from the other side of the house, so the cats don't associate me with that horrid rain.
