Hib ID

Raleigh, NC(Zone 8a)

Can anyone ID this hibiscus? I have some seeds from it, and just want to have an idea as to what it is so I know how to care for it when I sow them. It's fairly compact (only about 2 feet tall and about the same wide). Thanks much!

Here's an almost spent flower from the same plant.

Thank you Wilfred!

Given the height of the Hibiscus, color of the flower, color of the leaf and shape of the leaf it is most likely Luna Red. It is definitely not Lord Baltimore.

I have Luna Red (attached) already, and this one is much more pink/fuschia than red.

I plan to start some seeds germinating from the pink/fuchsia one, and may get better pictures next spring. We'll see. I definitely think it's a close relation to the luna red because the flowers are about the same size, and the leaf and plant structure is almost identical to my luna red. But the pink/fuchsia one has a dark center/eye whereas my red does not have a change at the center/eye of the bloom.

is it the same as mine

Sure looks like the same one to me. I might have to do some googling to see what I can find. Thanks Jen!

i dont know how great this is but i just found this http://www.ballhort.com/Landscapers/plant_info.aspx?phid=033102347004669

I've found several other references and pictures that are identical to what I posted, and probably the same thing as Jen/Smurf's hib, and they are identified as a Luna Rose. Guess we get to start a new plantfile! Though I'm not sure how one goes about that.

jlj072174,

smurf428 is correct it is Luna Rose. Here are some useful links:

http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&um=1&sa=1&q=luna+rose+hibiscus&btnG=Search+images&aq=f&oq=&aqi=&start=0

The Luna Hibiscus family portrait can be found on this page:

I had a strange experience with my Luna Red. The seed pods were oddly formed and very lumpy. When I went to harvest the seeds I found a small but fully formed hibiscus flower bud at the center of the seed pod. The bud was unopened but had bright red pedals. The other pods which were not as large also had buds at the center but the buds were not as well formed. Unfortunately I did not have a camera at hand but I intend to take photographs next year. I have the seeds and plan to start then in a month or two once I have my other hibiscus going.

Has anyone observed this condition in the Luna Hibiscus or other Hibiscus cultivates?

Mike

i have never had that.. Not that i'm an expert i just grew my first luna this year (i think its a luna its the pink and white) from seed this year.. Both this one and my luna rose gave me a few pods of seeds.. All i can say is WOW!! i had tropical ones most of the summer and one gave me seeds but I'm talking 8 in a pod.. the hardy ones had like 20 if not more... I pollinated them myself so i knew they would take.. With these plus others I will give them all a try this spring... to see what i get growing.. Has anyone mixed hardies?? can you cross any onf them?? (luna ans disco belles for example) I know they only come in a few colors but i would like to try.. Who knows maybe I'll get something nice...

I have plenty of seed of this pink one. If someone wants some give me a DM!

Lee -- Is yours a Luna Rose as well? Looks a lot like the one Smurf posted, as well as very similar to the one I found nearby. Thankfully, the one I found had seeds on it, so I'm set for now. I can't wait to get more germinated and growing for next year.

It is called newbiscus here but that is more a trademark I think.

cullman, AL(Zone 7b)

No that is to light to be a luna rose mine is almost fushia.. Very pretty though.. could be a Hibiscus moscheutos 'Anne Arundel'... or maybe a pink Hibiscus moscheutos 'Southern Belle'

Kerkdriel, Netherlands

I would love to have more kinds of these hibiscus moscheutos. I can't find any here in the Netherlands on the internet. No sellers.
Can someone here help me to get some seed of different kinds then mine?

Raleigh, NC(Zone 8a)

What are the requirements for sending/receiving seeds in the Netherlands? I might be able to help you out with some. I have some seeds from the Luna Rose, as well as other hardy ones (red, white, pink).

Kerkdriel, Netherlands

No problems receiving seeds or plants at all. I have received many different plants, cuttings and seeds from over the world.
