Carolina Mantid, Praying Mantis (Stagmomantis carolina)
That is a female Chinese Mantis not a Carolina Mantis.
Hi Happy 1892. I have been looking at picture after picture of mantids here on the BugFiles, and in the vast majority of the cases you have corrected the pictures of mantids identifyed as Carolina mantids. Could you please post of few pictures of Carolina Mantids (Stagmomantis carolina). I know nothing of mantids (other than that it's a great insect!), and would like to see the different types so I'll know what kind I'm looking at when I see them in my garden. I take it the Chinese Mantis, which seems to be plentiful, was imported here from China??
I live in North Central Ohio, and see mantids occassionally in my backyard. Do you have any idea which kind might be common to my area? I will attempt to take a picture next time I see one.
Yes, they came from China. Carolina Mantids look very different. Here are some pictures.
Adult female Carolina Mantis.

My computer does not work well so I cannot use or see photobucket anymore but I think you can. Here, you can see picture

Try to find pictures of Tenodera sinensis in my photobucket place. Adult female Tenodera sinensis are usually about 95mm long and adult males about 75mm. The Carolina Mantids are much smaller. Do you know of all the mantids that live in the United States?
You can see pictures of Tenodera sinensis here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenodera_sinensis
This is a picture of an adult female Tenodera aridifolia angustipennis (subspecies Tenodera aridifolia angustipennis listed on Mantodea.speciesfile.org and no Tenodera angustipennis but maybe that is incorrect. I think Narrow-winged Mantis is the same thing) .

Maybe you can see some Tenodera angustipennis pictures from this search.

Tenodera sinensis seem to be very common and wide spread. Carolina Mantids and Stagmomantis limbata and European Mantids and Iris oratoria are common. In the southeast I guess the Chinese and Carolina Mantids are most common, there are others like Brunneria borealis, Thesprotia graminis that I guess are not very common. In the west I do not think there are any S. carolina but they do live in Texas, just not all the way to California. Stagmomantis limbata I guess are more common than Stagmomantis californica.
