My mystery anthurium cross has bloomed ??Lari Ann??

Gainesville, FL

I was surprised to go out today and see that some of the larger ones of my little mystery anthurium cross have boloomed! The blooms are not at all what I expected...(well, I am not sure what I did expect), because they are so TINY!

The parent that produced the seed is a huge birdnest type anthurium with 3 ft long strap leaves, and I suspect but am not certain that the pollen parent was Anthurium gracile.

Anyway here is a photo of the first blooms. There are more than one in bloom and so far the blooms all look like they are the same color, a sort of a dark gold on the outside with a more reddish stripe (may not show that way in th epics but that is what it really looks like in person)

I put my hand in to show the scale.

Lari Ann, do you think the blooms will get bigger as the plants get bigger??

That bloom size is about what I would expect from a plant of that size. My birdsnest seedlings have little blooms, too, when they are small plants. As the plant gets larger, so do the blooms. However, since the blooms on A. gracile are naturally much smaller than those on birdsnest anthuriums, I would expect smaller sized blooms on progeny of such a cross.

Oh good! So its not going to end up being a big plant with teensy flowers.

Congratulations Gothqueen! I have about 75 baby birdsnest anthurium seedlings sprouting up. I "smuggled" some seeds back from my trip to mexico. We went on a 4wheeler trip through the jungle and i saw the bright red seeds flashing me down so i stopped my 4 wheeler and loaded up an empty water bottle. I had never tried to germinate these before but it only took a couple of days for the seeds to sprout. Can't wait until they are of blooming size. Don't ask me what I am going to do with 75 of them! I only want a few.

I have an entire flat of A. plowmanii and A. pedatoradiatum seedlings sprouted as well. I know what you mean! Maybe when yours get bigger we can trade seedlings

Sounds Fun. I can't tell you exactly which birdsnest they are but the momma i got the seeds from looked alot like the hookeri but like i said, i have no definite ID.

I love the look of both of those! I like the wider leaves on the Plowmanii and The fan like leaves of the Pedatoradiatum are beautiful!
