I was given the seed in a piece of fruit of what I have found to be Mammea americana...which is called Mamay. I found the ID in Jane Morton's book on tropical fruit trees and on Trade Winds Nursery. Now, this fruit is delicious...and I am very keen to grow it out.
However, I have a tree with a fruit called Mamay (in Mexico) and Mamay sapote (here in HI) which is VERY different. The M.sapote has deep orange flesh and a very shiney oblong seed. The 'new fruit' has a seed like an avocado with a rought skin.
Can anyone help here...without photos....or do I need to post a photo. OK...here is the NEW fruit:
Anyone know about Tropical Fruit Trees?
Oh lordy, Carol. Looks like something out of a horror movie. Hope it tastes better than it looks.
PK
HUH??..what a weird fruit...looks ugly but I hope it tastes good..
Carol, I am familiar with Pouteria Sapota (mamey sapote) which has reddish flesh, similar in color to papaya. Simply delicious in shakes, smoothies, etc.
I am not familiar w/ the one given to you as a gift but I found this. definitely two different fruits.

Did you plant the seed? It is a strange looking fruit.
I thought it looked like someone had thrown their hat
on the floor. Does it taste similar to a Mango?
Thanks all. I did find, at the Extension Service that the tree I grow is the Mamey Sapote and the mystery fruit is the Mamey Apple. Taste is DELICIOUS!!!! yes...kinda like Mango.
Hi Carol, the Mamey Apple is in the Clusia / Hypericum Family and is not related to the Mamey Sapote.
It likes an organic soil and loves rain, so will do well at your place.
Super, Dave....thanks. I managed to get 2 more seeds. Now to find some good root stock to graft it. Can I use another kind of fruit tree to graft? Like a Rolinia or a Citrus?
I don't think you need to graft the trees. You should get a good fruit tree from the seed.
Books tell me that a grafted tree will bear in 2-3 years and from seed 7-9. I would like them sooner than later...who knows what can happen, eh?
If that is the case, then your seed is the rootstock, and you would get the grafting buds from an established tree. For it to be worth the time the bud material should be from a known cultivar.
AH...OK...didn't know how that works. There is a woman in Kapoho with this tree(s?)... Thanks!!!
E komo mai. You're very welcome Carol.
Have a great day!
Aloha, Dave
