Passiflora Alata

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I grew this one from seeds labeled passiflora alata. Can someone confirm this via the leaves and bud? It hasn't opened yet.

I noticed the buds have EFN's .. extrafloral nectaries on them as well as the stems and base of the leaves. The ants are certainly attracted to it. Here is a picture of an immature bud. They are dark very dark at this stage.

Here is a mature bud and the EFN's have lightened up.

might have to wait for the flowers...

All the buds are dropping off so I'll probably have to wait until next year .. I'm going to be cutting it back soon and putting it in the greenhouse.

the buds are dropping? I had that happen when it didn't get enough water, but Mine is grown in a pot in the house all year...But I can't wait to see what yours looks like!

It will be awhile .. it's getting cut back to a nubbin tomorrow.

are you going to root any of the cuttings from it? i was thinking about doing that with my belotii...if the Blue Eyed Susan was bigger I'd take some from it

here's The Blue Eyed Susan bloom...I was so excited when it bloomed

No rooting the cuttings since I just don't have room in the greenhouse for any more starts. A lot of things are going to get cut back to nubbins tomorrow .. I'm have a new roof put on the house so I figure I don't want to be in the house when the hammering starts.

yeah I definately don't blame you there, I wouldn't want to be in the house either, I'd pay for postage if you would send me some cuttings....and I don't care what of....my hubby is building me a greenhouse as we speak...and I can't wait to fill it up! I finally get to grow some tropical plants that are a little more delicate

Sorry but I can't take on anymore pack it up and ship it thingys. I'm in the middle of 5 trades at the moment. I appreciate the offer though.

I have a list of those to do myself tomorrow! I have to cut my monster back soon too and it just seems a shame to throw all that away. but there is no way I could fit that many more cuttings in here, I might try 2 or 3 of it but well it's every bit if eight feet on most branches and some even longer!

How big should the cuttings be for starts anyway?

This is my first year with passies so I can't really say what is optimal.

hey then it's a learning experience for both of us! i also have some cactus I will start for the first time so I need to do some reading up on them...pretty sure they prefer something other than MG...and well to be honest I prefer the Expert Gardner brand to the Miracle grow

Xeramtheum,
The petiole glands on your Passiflora are apical, that is, two little bumps at the base of the leaf. These are found on P. nuriensis, P. edulis, P. securiclata.
The P. alata has three sets of double bumbs along the leaf stem.
This is based on information from The Journal and Newsletter of Passiflora Society International, Spring 2009, by John R. Vanderplank, UK.

yeah we all get to learn new stuff together....these are the seeds I have

1. Banana Passion Fruit passiflora mollissima
2. Sweet Grenadilla Passiflora ligularis
3. Purple Passion Flower Passiflora Edulis
4. Love-In-A-Mist Passiflora foetida
5. Red Fragrant Grenadilla passiflora alata
6. Rosy Passionfruit passiflora maliformis
7. Passiflora actinia
8. Passiflora edulis sp. flavicarpa
9. Blue Crown passionflower passiflora caerulea

and the 2 live ones are Passiflora x belotti and Blue Eyed Susan (I'm guessing some variety of edulis)

I have a passiflora alata ("Fragrant granadilIa") I started from seed about a year ago. It now has many 12 ft long vines with luxurious growth but has not produced a single flower? Does anyone know why?
