There are some interesting plants on sale. Does anyone have any experience with big red sage, gayfeather, heartleaf skullcap, or heath or willowleaf aster?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, I have experience with all of them, I raised them all, with help of course.
Josephine.

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

sorry I can't make it. I have gotten some very nice plants in other years. Hope it goes well.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

We hope so too, sorry you can't make Anna, we will see you at the swap.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Dennis, I can comment on a few.

The big red sage is nice. It's not really red though, more fuchsia. It gets close to 5 feet tall, blooming from early to late summer. It needs to be staked if you want it to stay upright the whole time.

Heartleaf skullcap is a nice purple mostly shade plant with growth habit similar to some salvias. It's a woodland plant in it's native habitat. There are several good pictures in this blog post showing a mature patch of it. http://www.penick.net/digging/?p=285

I think the Willowleaf aster is actually from me originally. :-) It's a good wildflower plant but not good in an established bed. It looks similar to our native fall aster but the flowers are a bit bigger and I don't think it gets woody. I planted it several years ago in a garden bed in the front of my old house. The next year, the original plant was dying out in the middle and sending out suckers 4 feet away all the way around. I dug it up and gave it to Josephine. It was just to "wild" for the front bed.

Hello Stacey, yes that is right, the Willowleaf Aster came from you, thank you very much.
I like it a lot, I have it in my slope in full sun and it does great.
You are right, it is not a plant for a managed bed, it is more for a wildflower meadow or patch.
We haven't had trouble with the Big red sage falling over but we keep it in mostly sun.
Josephine.

I also have gotten some good stuff there in the past. We may make it but we have our 4 year old Great Nephew for two nights, and not sure what our energy level will be tomorrow!! LOL!

Hmm, I looked on the website and now I think the "salvia" I planted from a packet of seed might be betony. How do I know which it is? It has square stems but this is not hardy in my yard it just keeps coming back from seed. Some seasons it has looked good and others not so much.

It was a great sale, very nice looking plants.

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

I bought some good stuff! :)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey guys, how come you didn't talk to me?
I did really well, but we are exhausted, thank you very much to all who came.
Josephine.

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

I showed up right at the beginning, when it was a madhouse and my daughter kept saying "I want to go home"... not very conducive to chatting. :)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Sorry I didn't get to talk to you, but maybe next week at the Swap, which plants did you get?
Josephine.

Dallas, TX

Josephine,

I said hi really quickly (you handed me a bee balm), but you had about 4 different people calling you're name at once, so not a good time to chat. We'll chat next weekend.

Kate

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

I didn't see you, but was that your husband at the gate? I think I was in-and-out in about 5 minutes flat! :)

I ended up with gayfeather, skeletonleaf goldeneye, four nerve daisy, fall obedient plant, ruellia nudiflora, and big red sage. I just came in from planting - can't get too far behind with next weekend's RU coming up!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Sorry I missed you Kate, it was really busy at certain times.

Yes Dennis that was my husband at the gate.
You made some really good choices I hope they do well for you.
Josephine.

Arlington, TX

As usual I ended up with more than I planned on. The one item I didn't get was the heart leaf scullcap. I spoke with you Josephine, you helped convince me to get one of the hibiscus, guess I should have introduced myself!
Cheryl

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, yes you should have, right now everything is a blur, so I can't picture you in my mind.
I guess I will meet you for real at the swap.
Josephine.

Arlington, TX

Not much to swap but yes I plan on coming. Wanting to meet people and see what the swap is like for the spring?
Cheryl
