Drip Irrigation for Bonsai?

Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

Hello,

I'm new to bonsai - very new - and I have just one bonsai plant to take care of so far. Because I have just that one, I don't have any problems hand watering whenever necessary.

However, I've been having fun daydreaming about adding more and more bonsai to my collection in the coming years. With that said, I still want to be realistic in my bonsai reveries. It gets very hot and dry here in Sacramento for several months on end and I'm not always available for daily watering. Life happens, right? Drip irrigation on a timer has solved that problem for me with my other container plants though.

So my questions are for those of you who have multiple bonsai pots. How do you water them? Is drip irrigation a bad idea because it doesn't require daily inspection of your bonsai? Should I just research plants that can take a day or two without water once in a while and try those?

Any advice or thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I have about 30 bonsais. I am going to buy a drip system next week. Many trees have to be watered twice a day. I am retired and don't mind the waterings but I am concerned for the times I will be away. Please don't let the irrigation take away from the daily inspection of your trees. This is critical if you have a number of trees. I have been told that having trees is like having a dog - you have to pay attention to it. It will tell you what it needs.

Thanks for the reply. It's good to know that drip irrigation can be used for bonsai.

It can be used but as csj implies, it is not a substitute for observing when a tree needs water or how much. In Japan, how to water is the first thing a student learns.

And dirt, I would think that was a problem. It is for me.

My bonsai irrigation system is installed and working beautifully.

Some have them working with timers so they can travel.
