I planted open pollinated "Golden Bantam" corn seed this year. Came up beautifully and now the corn is ripe. We picked a few, came right into the house and cooked them for dinner. They're beautiful to look at, and taste like corn, but there is NO SWEETNESS at all in their taste.
Can anyone help me figure out why?
Victory Seed described them as "sweet". Did I do something wrong?
Will the seeds I save from them yield unsweet corn next time?
My "Golden Bantam" sweet corn is NOT sweet. Why?
Could be your corn was overripe.
Hmmmm..... We picked a couple ears 5 days ago and the kernels weren't quite done forming, so we left them till yesterday. Can they finish and go past ripe within 5 days?
How do you tell when they are ripe? I watched for the silk to turn brown.
Golden Bantam is as sweet as any open pollinated corn. BUT if you have grown used to modern hybrids, especially the supersweets, it is like comparing a bagel to a doughnut. When overage it just gets tough and chewy.
OK. It's not tough or chewy so that's good. Must be I'm just use to the super sweets. My DH thought it was fine, so it must be me. :-P lol
Thanks a bunch! You guys are awesome! :-D
