Here's a picture. Assembled the bin according to manufacturers manual.
Gusanito worm bin PROBLEMS
That looks like a first class worm bin. Does it keep the temp at a constant? I know worms like it better with a constant temp. I don't have a bin like that, I have a large worm bed.Don't over feed, and don't over water. Mike
well, so far (it's been a week now) the temp in that room has been a constant 21 or 22 C↑°. Actually tonight I checked again because I needed to tighten the under cloth (it was not tight enough and worms had gotten in). It''s very damp but not soggy.
Also discovered that all the food is gone. Tomorow new feeding day. No more escapees!! yippee
sounds like you are about to "plane out", and have smooth sailing. Its always best for them to be in a little "need" than have a surplus, where food is concerned. Do you supliment with coffee grounds, and oak leaves? Not many, but a few crusted up leaves, and thats only if your plan can suplement. Mike
I use to raise worms for fishing. All I did was put them in a cooler in the basement with some wet newspaper and coffee grounds. If I remeber right you could buy something called worm bedding which was just chopped up newspaper. They were pretty much hands off.
They seem to be ok. Monday is new feeding day. Decided that 1/2Lb is quite right (for now), they were all huddled in the corner where I last put food. If however we really want to get rid of all our kitchen scaps this way I need atleast 1 more Lb of worms. I'd like to see how I do with this. Will prepare new tray for monday, which goes on top of current one, all worms are supposed to go there then and leave the good stuff behind. The thing I still cannot quite figure out, to decipher if I have babies already? I've had them only for almost 4 weeks now.
I use peatmoss and shredded newspaper for bedding, we have what you call a double schredder, it makes real small pieces.
Yes, Mike, btw I do supplement with little coffee grounds (i use coffee pods since I'm only one drinking it), so don't have too much. No oak leaves, I thought oakleaves were hard for them to break down?? Or am I confused with other tree leaf now...
Since I've read about the overfeeding before: I now have a few 1/2 lb zipploc bags with ground up stuff in freezer. To the astonishment of my 16 yr old who was wondering "what kind of obscure meal" I had frozen????!!!!!... lol teenagers-- you gotta love them! They are sooooo flexible...NOT.
Worms do eat most of the time, but over feeding leads to contaminated soil, and thats not good.Things like coffee grounds are a staple to worms, but too much kitchen left-overs is a NO NO. The smell should always be "earthy", not spoiled.Adjectives! Adjectives!, my kingdom for adjectives. People love the way I talk, tie my hands, and I become speachless. Mike
