Can BT that is used on cabbage worms kill the worms that are found on ears of corn? If so when do you spray? If BT doesn't work, what does?
corn ear worms
I haven't had any success with BT on corn earworms.
I use Conserve, it is approved for organic gardeners in TX(but not all states) and will kill the caterpillars. Check the label for how long between spraying and harvesting, usually it's a day or two, but with some things it is longer.
Several people in our ag co-op use corn oil dabbed on the silks after they start turning color, but I haven't tried that.
I had corn this year from a neighbor who grows wonderful corn and tons of it. There are worms, but not many. I could not find out the variety, but I noticed the husks were wrapped real tight at the tip which helps keep the worms out. In catalogs, I noticed some varieties are advertised as having tight husks. For next year, I'm going to try one. I hate to spray.
Thanks for reminding me about those CompostR. I remember seeing them mentioned in the catalogs and meant to try some.
I grew Silver Queen this year because it was supposed to have tight husks, and I got no pests into the ears.
I wonder if there are any super sweets or SE varieties with tight husks?
Well, I was going to do this anyway so - Looking into some catalogs, I found:
Burpee
Maple Sugar Hybrid - "...great husk protection..."
Jung
Krispy King Yellow - "tight protective husk ..."
Trinity Bicolor - "Good husk protection..."
Delectable Bicolor - "Has good husk characteristics ..."
R.H. Shumway's
Northern Extra Sweet - "... better husk protection ..."
Frosty - "... good ... husk protection."
Park's
Serendipity - "... in tight green husks ..."
Honey 'N Pearl - "Tight husks reduce ear-worm infestation."
I haven't grown any of these, but I plan to try some. I'm just passing on what they advertized.
Thanks CompostR, I'll have to see if the seed companies I buy from carry any of these.
I've grown Delectable bicolor for several years and still had earworms. The earworms that I have bore right through the husk anywhere along the whole ear.
Mmmm - I wondered what "good husk characteristics" meant. I guess it doesn't mean it resists the worms! Honey 'N Pearl was the only ad that specifically referred to corn worms.
I'll keep looking!
I can't blame the earworms. Delectable is one of the most delicious varieties that I've ever grown. There must be an organic solution to those pests.
