A few weeks ago, I dug up my Dark Angel Dahlia bulbs, cleaned them off and stuck them in my fridge as per someones advice. now, they all have a little mold on them. is this normal? what should I do?
Help! My Stratified Bulbs Are Mouldy!
You may want to check in the Dahlia forum for advice. I've never stored Dahlias in the fridg before, seems that may be too humid for them. Most prefer to store them in sawdust, vermiculite, or peat (although peat can dry them out too much), in a cool, dry place. There are sulfur powder products that folks like to dust the tubers with before storage to inhibit mold.
The 2 big issues with Dahlias in winter storage are mold/rot or over drying, and its always been kinda hit and miss for me. Its helpful to check them from time to time while they're stored, if they're shriveling (too dry), you can mist them lightly till they start plumping back up, and if they're showing signs of rot or mold, rotten parts should be removed and the tubers should be given good air circulation till the tubers are good and dry. Some sort of anti fungal treatment would be a good idea too.
Last year I had the best luck ever with winter storage, only lost a couple of small tubers. The strange thing is I was the laziest I've ever been with their winter care. I dug them up, let them dry with some soil still clinging to them, cut off the stalks, and plopped them into plastic grocery bags. I loosely tied the bags, put them in crates, and let them sit under the table in the plant room (which stays cool during winter). They were where I could see them and check regularly. I did have to mist a few in January, and several started sprouting in February and March, and those I went ahead and potted up and grew them under lights.
