Amarillo TriState Fair Chicken Show

(Zone 6b)

Well, I was able to go to the fair and even arrived on time for the judging.

It looks like they are a small group of people, five in total. They are the Amarillo Bantam Association.

One couple had 60-something entries, which was over half the total entries. The wife said they also show in Lubbock, Abilene and a few other towns in Texas. They seemed like nice people. All chicken people are nice, aren't they? They had one HUGE black cochin that weighed 25 to 30 lbs. He was the biggest and best looking chicken I've EVER seen in my life! So handsome too.

I learned a little bit about how they classify the chickens, into different varieties, combs and featherleg or clean leg, etc. It's still very foreign to me, but they seemed eager to explain it, and I was able to comprehend some things.

They gave me the name and phone number of the man that comes to test your flock for some kind of disease. They must be tested each year that you show. The good news is, it only costs $10 or so.

All in all, I enjoyed it. They also have a contest in the spring. Maybe I'll have my little partridge silkies ready to go for that.

I took some videos and may post a link if I ever get them up on google videos.

I just can't get over that big cochin rooster. He was so big! I thought the Jersey Giants were supposed to be the biggest chickens that exist, but aren't they only 15 lbs? This guy was close to 30 lbs they said.

I'm pretty sure I have chickenitis.

How wonderful: Hope you had a great time? sounds like you did, and learned some new stuff also. Was your daughter and granddaughter able to meet you there also. We would love to see some pic's of the family as well as the birds. Thanks for sharing with us and I hope you can have your's ready to show at the next event. Haystack. P.S. I heard from ZZ's also and she is doing well in the classroom and this new prospective co she wants to drive for. She has been battling a cold however so I told her we would be praying for a speedy recovery, and successful conclusion to the classroom. She misses everyone.

I am not very good at taking videos and my camera is not that great, but here is the big cochin I mentioned. It does not do him justice. He really is a magnificent bird. I wish I had one like him.

I don't know the little boys talking. They were there looking at the rooster too. He says, "Look at the BIG chicken". cute :D

Anyone else have these big cochins? I am so impressed with them.
