Full of Blooms....Just Not Blooming.... Newbie here....Help!

Baton Rouge, LA

Hello Hibbie Lovers...

I have to say Hibiscus are the favorite for this beginner Gardener in 8B.

I have 6 Tropical Hibiscus (One in a Pot). All have bloomed at least once this year.

My Healthiest 5 are Right Now FILLED with blooms....however I only see flowers (about one a day...one every other day) on Two Plants....

I have found a few yellowed fallen "Unbloomed" flowers....but not enough to make me think they are dropping blooms before they can open....

Is this just timing? (like in...maybe they are blooming then falling before I can get out there)....

I find this hard to believe because even though I've been busy....I do get out in my back yard...almost at LEAST once per day....to look at them during the work week...although not as much lately...we've had rain almost every day for the last 2 weeks or so....

What could be happening?

Thanks in advance to all of you wonderful Daves Garden Folks for your advice!

I'm not sure I totally understand the problem--are the plants filled with buds but you're only seeing a few blooming at a time? That sounds pretty normal--blooms typically only last for a day or two, and buds mature at different rates so when you've got a lot of buds it would be rare for them to all open at the same time, chances are they'll be spaced out a bit more so that you'll always have a few blooms. Chilly/cloudy/rainy weather can also hold them up on blooming--we don't have rain out here in the summer but when it's cool and foggy mine don't tend to bloom as much, they tend to do their best when weather's warm & sunny and they definitely bloom more then. So if your rain stops and you get some nice warm sunny weather you may see that more blooms will start opening at a time.

I think Mary means most are blooming well except for two bushes???? If that is it, it might just mean that those varieties are nor heavy bloomers. I've noticed there are plants that are stingier with blossoms and others that are very generous.

Also hibiscus tend to go through phases with blooming--most of my plants will go through a phase where they bloom a lot, then they'll take a break for a while, then they'll come back and bloom a lot again, so it's possible a couple plants are in a heavy blooming phase and the others aren't right now.

Thanks to ALL!

I guess what I mean is they are COVERED with Buds.....yet I never see one that is in bloom...never see an actual Flower......

Maybe it's the Rain...we have had a lot of rain lately. But none today...

I have found some fallen...unopened buds that for some reason never matured to a full Bloom....

As long as most of the buds aren't falling off, I would guess they're just waiting for warmer sunnier weather. I know when we get a stretch of cool weather sometimes it feels like it takes forever for buds to actually open, seems like they'll just sit there and sit there. If you get some sunny warm weather I bet they'll all start to pop open and you'll have a nice show!

Thanks ecrane & All.....

For example...This one (pic) has been covered with buds for at least the last month....and I haven't seen a flower on this plant for at least a month....or maybe longer....

maybe it's just timing....maybe I just need to be patient...like you said....they may take a long time from bud to bloom.....

This picture was taken in April...it was blooming back then...but "not so much" now.....

Hugs,
Mary

As long as the buds are still looking healthy I wouldn't worry, they really can sit there forever when the weather's not making them happy. I've seen buds sit there for a really long time when the weather is cool & foggy (and I suspect cloudy & rainy could have a similar effect). If the buds are turning yellow or brown or look like they're dying and then falling off then there's something else going on but as long as they're looking healthy I'd hang in there and hope for some sunshine!

Thanks a Bunch! Yes - with all the rain we've been having...maybe they are just waiting for some Sunshine!
