I cut back a flame acanthus over a month ago (variety that is more red than orange). I didn't have any rooting hormone but still wanted to try and root some of the stems. Put them into sand with a little potting soil mixed in and kept them relatively moist and shaded. Now after all these weeks they are growing and a few of them are attempting to flower. When I pulled one out to see if it had roots there were none! How are they growing, making leaves and flowering after 6 weeks of being rootless?

flame acanthus question
Not sure Cheryl, but they are tough drought resistant plants. Even their roots are woody and sparse. It might be a while until they root. I have never tried to root them but have tons of seedlings come up as volunteers every year. Those things pop all over the bed.
mysterious! I know when I have tried to root rose stem in water, I see roots and even leaves, but it isn't viable. Probably the nice moist conditions helped the acanthus grow, but I am interested to see what others have to say.
They are in a sunny area and have been for a few weeks. Still growing/blooming etc. and no roots in sight. I guess the long rainy spell kept them going. I will keep them watered and see what develops.
