Daffodil Question

Champaign, IL(Zone 5b)

I had many daffodils planted in my front yard where I used the idea to "just toss them into the grass and plant them where they land". This has given us an amazing show the past few springs.

Now comes the problem:
The city had to do some work in my yard which included digging up about 200 of my daffodils bulbs. They did allow me to sift through the dirt to rescue my darlings before they hauled it away. Now I have approximately 200 bulbs sitting in a bushel basket. Can I just replant them now? Normally I wouldn't plant Daff bulbs until much later, but these just came out of the ground yesterday.

If it's not ok to replant, then what should I do with them for the next month or so?

Greetings.

It seems to me that since they just came out of the ground you are simply putting them, essentially, back where they were. If they were overcrowded it gives you a nice opportunity (however unasked for!) to separate them and give them a bit of bulb food, and water them in.

I'm digging up lilies and replanting them now despite the fact that I would normally do it a month later. My bulbs are overcrowded. I've done it befor. Lilies are fragile, and have no tunic. Daffs are tough. Just spread them out a bit so that they aren't sitting on top of each other in that basket - don't want them to rot. No creatures will eat them.

I think you have a great attitude about your bulbs. Good for you!

Thanks for the info!

At least the ground should be easy to work since the city just placed fresh dirt and sod over the mess they created.

I'm going to just try to pull up the sod a bit, bury the daffs, and put the sod back in place. Hopefully I can make it look like I didn't mess with it.

Well, at least until the spring! HE HE! Then the secret will be out :)
