Here is a picture of what was dried on the seed head of my lotus when it flowered. These don't look like other lotus seeds I've seen. Was mine a faulty-seed producer?
Viable lotus seeds?
Those are seeds that didn't get pollinated. They won't produce lotus plants. We've had those a lot. This year we finally had some pollinated ones.
Bummer! :(
Thanks much! I'd have been pretty sad to have tried to start them and never see anything produce.

Thank you so much! How big/wide are those leaves? They look like they're 2 feet wide!
hmmm...i didn't even think to measure them. LOL i think i was still in shock that they are growing in the middle of the desert. haha!
Where is it in Tucson that those are growing? I lived in Tucson (southeast) for about 4 years in the mid-90s. I miss it so much! I google-mapped my old house the other day to see what it looked like now in a moment of sentimental remembrance.
WOW! Do you mind sharing your m ethod? I've not germinated lotus seeds before, so I want to make sure I do it right.
all i did was sand the seeds down until i started to see the white. that's the endosperm. i'll do another one and post a pic later today.
Do you start them in a dish of water or a medium such as soil or clay?
i just started them in a cup of water. i make sure to change the water ofen and sometimes i add a splash of hydrogen peroxide.
TP: is there a preferred storage method for these seeds (e.g., fridge, freezer, cool/dark, etc.)? I want to make sure I keep them in an ideal storage location for spring sowing. Thanks much!
i don't know. i am just leaving mine in the laundry room with all my other plant stuff. LOL
K, thanks much! It's getting chilly on this side of the country. How are the temps out your way?
we had two nights in the 30s. now it's back in the 50s at night and we are about to break some high records. go figure! that cold snap came too early. i don't want it to go below 50 this winter. haha! yeah, i have lost my mind. LOL
For giggles, I google mapped my old house there there a couple weeks ago, just to see what it looks like today. Not much change, but boy, did it make me miss it even more. If I had half the light-green thumb I have now, my cute little, slump block house by the old bone yard would have been a much prettier castle than when I had it!
Ironically, my daughter's Godmother moved back there after spending a couple years on the east coast, and we talked about maybe making a visit trip out to see her. I know, though, if I do, I won't want to come back home.
the weather is perfect right now! come home...come home...
