How do u keep track of names?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

So, I started rooting a couple of leaves, and I thought I'd remember which leaf was from which plant- LOL- and of course, I totally forgot!

I put a few leaves in a pan of perlite, not individual cups. (is that wrong?)

So, do you root leaves in their own cup because it makes for better rooting or just better to keep track of their names.

I already have a few NOID's due to my carelessness....

I have group rooted streps before . . . but did tag each 'row'. It is much easier (for me) to keep each cup to one variety of leaf.

As for your NOID's, if you know which ones were part of the group, keep an eye on the blooms of the babies . . .

I don't!!!! LOLOL

Oh, good, Susan, so happy to hear that from you!

The plants are so pretty, and I'm never going to do this professionally, so do I really need to label everything?!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have to label each one or I have nothing.........but I don't dare try to keep an inventory of what I have...........I just use scotch tape and write on the tape stuck on the pot....

I don't grow AV's anymore but had a problem when I did grow them. I started out being so good about labeling everything, I buy the packs of little white sticky labels in the office supply aisle at Wal-Mart. Problem is ... I end up breaking leaves and bits and pieces of plants and just stick them in the nearest available soil, which results in lots of noids.

edited to add: I forgot to say how much I like the looks of your display on the windowsill ... very nice! I went through a phase for years of planting all kinds of plants in glass jars, vases, bowls. I had terrariums for years but all of a sudden this summer they all crashed, some had been planted up for eight or more years! A couple still have a plant or two hanging on and I might replant a couple of terrariums but I'm not going to have as many. Looking at your windowsill makes me want to plant up a few little glass containers though! ^_^

I either write on the pots with permanent sharpie marker, or use a white sticky label. Even though I am not the most organized person, I have been pretty good at keeping track of my plants - If I take a leaf off a plant or one breaks, I put it in a little condiment cup with some water, and label it right away, because eventually they all get potted up in their own pots, I don't stick them in with another plant.

Now if only the rest of my life were so well planned.

Great observation, jmp!!! My plants are organized but the rest of my life is totally out of control (LOL)

Thanks to Gail, the names of the ones she sent me are on the pots.......now if only I knew the names of the others that I planted that are producing 'ears'! I forgot who gave me what ..leaves, that is, and they are just rolling merrily along growing ears unaware they are nameless.......I don't know if I ever will be more organized...

I wish I had more room! The one window I had is letting me down...too many trees grew leafier this year.......my AV babies and leaves are all under artificial light and doing well! I will have to figure something out in this room I now have the set up under
artificial light....

Room, room...I remember when I had a big house.......(sigh!)

Thanks, all!

Space is a big issue- that's why I wanted to put down a bunch of leaves in one foil pan pan, rather than individual cups, and it's difficult to keep track of what's what in one pan....

With streps, I do the group rooting thing and label each plant with a file folder label stuck on the top of the lid.

I usually root av leaves in solo cups and just write on the cup.

Now mind you I do put names on them when I pot them but my cats have a way of knocking over things and then they go poof and I say oh well... I do at times try to make a list of the ones I have so if in doubt I can look and not buy the same one... but like most things here I am always behind and streps die.. I need to up date my list...

Unless it is a standard av leaf, I use the one ounce clear plastic condiment things for rooting leaves........can get hundreds in a big tray at once...................

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Gail, do you use a separate stand for propagating from the one you grow on? You always have tons of leaves starting:)

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

No, she doesn't!!! LOL!! ^_^

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Nichole, you know me well!!! On the same stand, for example, I have leaves on the bottom close to the lights on the bottom two shelves, then come leaf pots making bigger babies without the domes and baby streps blooming........................then I have chiritas making babies and bigger chiritas..............and on and on...................

I have 'stuff' everywhere in this house........Nichole knows!!!

I am very new to this though maybe what I have learned in growing other things may be helpful. I love growing thing all kinds of things. I love annuals and perennials and vegetables and fruit trees and just anything. My mom was very careful when she taught me how to grow things and I tend to be careful too.

When I start things indoors, I usually use celled trays. I think these might work for leaves too and not take up much space because you can get celled trays that have quite small cells. I use a permanent marker and label the cells with letters across the top and numbers along the side. So if I have 10 cells across and 5 cells down then the one in the bottom right corner is J5 and the one at the top left corner is A1. Then I write the letter/number combinations on a pad and I keep a pad just for what I grow. next to the letter'number I write what I planted in that cell. I hope this isn't too complicated sounding because it's not at all difficult just sounds like it.

I didn't do that with my leaves that I received because I was trying to isolate them and my trays that I grow other things in do not have covers so I couldn't cover them. I can honestly say that the leaves in my cups in the little baggies are in some ways easier than having them in a tray. I can fit them anywhere and do not need a large space for the container. I think Gail said she write on tape adn that is what I did too so I can use the cup again later. I just put masking tape on like a label and write what the leaf is. If I had two leaves that were the same, I put them in the same cup.

My mistake was trying to save too much space and rooting a bunch of leaves in a foil tray of perlite. Next time I'll fill the tray with condiment cups and label each cup.

For all of you who have mini-noid's, I'd love to trade or buy leaves from you! And thanks, Nichole for pointing out the trade thread to me and being my first trading partner:)

It is not that I don't want to trade right now. I just can't catch up long enough to cut leaves and send them out.

I am trying to grow waaaaaaaaay too many plants right now . They own me rather than me owning them.
