I have a 2 year old Aumericana rooster, 4 4-5 month old buff Brahma roosters , and I was considering adding a 1 year old dark Brahma rooster(and some hens) to my flock. 3 of the 4 buffs will be finding new homes, and all my 3 types of chickens have there own coops (well, my coop has 4 separate coops within it.) But, they all free range all day.....lots of you have more than one rooster, advice on how to stop them from fighting?
roosters
Hi Batflower: Chickens have their pecking order, and roosters have their dominance. So much of what goes on has many factors to it. Even things that are not apparent to us. Usually if theres enough space they do alright, but boyz will be boyz and when it comes to one rooster wanting to mate with anothers hen's well as I said boyz will be boyz. Often times they will work it out, and seldom does it result in damage except maybe to ones ego. Don't be afraid to try something, and watch, be patient and don't step in if they are just sparing a little. Comon even the girls mix it up at times. I have four large roosters and a bantie roo in the same run and they fuss a little sometimes, and, I just stay out of it unless it gets to rough, and seldom does that ever happen. Good luck to you. so what would be the best way to introduce a new roo ?
Well there again, not everyone has the best setup to facilitate a real good situation. I have a fenced run withing the run and let new roosters stay in there for a week where they see each other all the time and can even interact some. After a week I simple open the door so the new ones can come out, or the old ones can wander into the small run. There is always a little fussing but they work it out. I just did that with two brand new black copper roos and they are very large. After a little bumping of chests and short sprint races they all settled down, and there will be a few fusses when mating takes place but that will settle down also. They have lots of room and thats the key to acceptance for the most part. Once again good luck to you. Hay
