Cool weather veggies

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

I was thinking of trying to plant a very small amount of spinach or lettuce or something, but I'm not sure there's enough time. I've never tried a cool weather crop - think I can do it here in Central Ohio?
The date of first frost is generally first week of Oct.
The date of first freeze is generally first week of Nov.

it is kid of late...you may be able to find good size broccoli starts at a good garden store... lettuce takes around 30 days to get to a reasonable size - you might be able to get green ice or four seasons (leaf lettuce).. romaine will take longer but, like spinach and arugula, romaine can handle light frosts..

plant them in as much sun as possible and just put a piece of plastic or row cover over them on the nights they call for frost.

What jj said . . .

OR, you could plant your lettuce in a container and bring it in at night if it gets too cold.

This is a planting guide I found on the web: http://www.bobsmarket.com/pdf/vegetable-planting-guide.pdf bobs market and I have nothing in common. It looks like according to guide you are one month to late., (if you were to keep them outside the whole time)

Thanks Bob! I had come to that conclusion, too. So, I'll wait till spring to plant my spinach :) The guide is great, though, and will really come in handy for next year's plantings. This fall I'll just focus on clean up and soil prep (once the plants die back.)
