These are the little AV plants I received from Blossoms, Birds and Butterflies (Karen Dean on Ebay) a couple days ago. As you can see, one lost almost all its leaves, but the 2 baby leaves have grown a bit so hopefully it will be OK. I put the pack of cigarettes in to compare size. ChuLin
New little AVs
They all look very healthy! Did you plant the leaves that fell off the one plant to see if you could get them to root and grow new babies?
They really look nice and healthy and in great shape.
Which ones did you get?
No. I didn't try to start the leaves that came off as they were all munched and mashed. And I am so limited in space, and there are SO many AVs that I want! The free one she sent is Little Bo Peep, a mini. The ones I bought are Shirl's Senior Moment (love the name as I have SO many of those moments), Mac's Stop Sign, Tomboy Blue, Newtown's Sassy Wins, Golden Eye, and Suncoast Lavender Silk. All are doing really good and the one that had lost most of the leaves (Sassy Wins) is going to be OK I think as the 2 baby leaves have doubled in size. I'm pleased I have something new to "fuss" over. ChuLin
I have been pleased with the plants I have purchased from Blossoms, Birds and Butterflies everything has been nice so far.
You should try Jacksviolets on ebay. I bought a bunch from him and they are the nicest plants I have purchased on ebay. They were nearly twice the size, and a lot of them are coming into bloom now. He also has a sale going on until the end of the month, it's almost all BUY IT NOW out of his store. He packs well, and ships fast. I'll be buying more of his plants before the end of the month.
I just threw out this morning two avs from Jacksviolets.......they were diseased............sorry about that..............they really weren't grown with much care or nutrients............I am sure that some are nice but mine weren't.........had already thrown the others away from him. I have better luck with other vendors.
You are going to love Suncoast Lavender Silk...........She is total variegation and shiny glittery lavender blooms....don't have a good pic but will show you what I have. She is now twice the size she was and is getting ready to bloom again.
I did get some violets (mini) from Jack about 4 years ago, but they all died, and I think it was my fault. I was in a different apartment with very little sunlight at all, and I think if kept them too wet anyway. They were healthy and all when I got them, but I didn't realize how much light they needed...or really much at all about AVs. I was going to order from Jack again this time, but the store was "empty" and he was gone on vacation or something. I see he is back now. I will check out his store again. ChuLin
Gessiegail, I don't have any of that all the plants I got from him are doing really well.
That is great.......I don't know what happened to all of mine. I only ordered because I wanted Lil Darlin' and two month later she is still in an ounce cup....that is how small he sent her............she had no root system whatsoever.
That is ok........we all have our favorite vendors and so far I choose Green Dragon Trading Post, David Thompson and several others for av plants. I also order from PJ's Plant and Things......good plants.
Honest, some of the plants from Jack are 8 inches across already. I got some stuff from Green Dragon too, an it was nice. I'll have to take some photos.
I just ordered a "Green dragon" from Jack's. Hope it'll be o.k.
It will. Jack sends nice big violets. You just have to do the grooming on them.
Cool, THANKS!
So did we decide that Jack sends good AVs or not? I ordered from him a couple years ago and they were nice, but recently, are they okay? I know Gail was displeased with a couple she got, but overall, order from him or find someone else?
I think we just never know unless we find someone like Green Dragon Trading post or someone else we know that consistently delivers fine healthy plants every single time.
I know, and I've bought two boxes of plants from Green Dragon! LOL Got my second one yesterday! I've never seen such perfect little jewels in all my life! I got 'Definitely Darryl' in this box and it's absolutely gorgeous! I need to stop getting AVs and get a few begonias, though. I lost them all last winter and miss growing them. Anyone know any good and cheap begonia sellers?
You are going to love Definitely Darryl..........bummer I didn't see that one on Green Dragon.........(LOL)
There is a nursery two hours from my house Rain.......and you would die if you could see their begonias at very reasonable prices..let me see if I can find some pics I took time before last when I was there....they don't put names on them, but if you are a begonia lover, you would recognize them.
can't find pics right now..........
will keep looking
I need to come visit you, Gail! LOL I'd love to have nurseries around here like that! Do you still have your begonias, or did they all die? I like the little rex and rhizomatous ones that stay small. Canes do well for me, but they get too big.
I gave all my canes to the housekeeper.........she has a greener thumb than I do!!!!
When I find those pictures of the rhizomatous ones from Seguin......I will show you.........hoping to get back to Seguin sometime in October..........they are magnificent.
First, Gail the babies you sent me are really growing...most have ears the size of nickels!
But anyone tell me why my large violets that I bought just before I signed on here last August are just producing leaves and have all but stopped blossoming...........one here and there with a few very pretty blossoms, but the rest of them about 5 or 6 big plants...standard...are just producing more and more leaves..
healthy, but huge...same light..about 12 inches...same fertilizer Gail sent...etc......what makes these plants do this.? I had the same problem years ago when I first tried this.....
Should I have replanted these to begin with...? Seems there are no quality growers where I live........only Loew's...........and occasionally a supermarket......
African violets need to be repotted every 4 months even if you use the same pot and just fresh soil.................I always replant into my own soil when I get any african violet potted up...........
My club president also says that everytime you pot up, take off the bottom row of leaves and plant the plant a little deeper. All new foliage comes from the center............
B-bon.............don't be afraid to take that bottom row of leaves off.......when you repot
