My silkie hatched one chick today she has 5 more eggs, this is so exciting for me and the dh our first ever broody hatch. Its cold and rainy today so I turned on the heat lamp in the small coop where they are,its 60 outside showery.I can`t wait for them all to hatch and I will send pictures.
Broody hatched first chick! I`m so excited
OH Green!!! I'm so happy for you and Hubby. Congrats!!!! I don't know whats the most exciting, first egg, or first baby chicken, hatched by your own broody. You guy's rock.
YAY! It is so much fun to see those tiny little things. Silkies are excellent broodies and mothers, she will take good care of her babies. Can't wait to see the pictures.
I hope by tomorow morning all have hatched and are healthy. Will put out chick feed tomorow and water with marbles in it.I wish it was warmer but I know if they are cold they will get under mom,but I also have a heat lamp in there so I can turn that on.
Congratulations! It is so amazing to see a supposedly "stupid" chicken take such wonderful care of her babies. My little Nankins will take on anything to protect their chicks. I think chickens are a universal symbol of motherhood. I wish more people could experience the miracle of it.
This is yesterdays chick, another hatched this morning and another a few minuties ago but have not ween those two they are under the mother getting warm and dry.She is staying close to the water and chick feed I don`t thing she can get any closer.I will get better pictures tomorow I don`t want to bother her anymore. They are some tiny.Got the heat lamp going out there it is windy and cold today but its nice in the coop. Can`t wait to see all of them,I have my bator going just in case she gets of the nest, not sure it all the eggs were hers, they may be a few days in between the eggs
That's so sweet. Congratulations.
Maybe he's guarding. :)
He doesn`t have to worry, noone can get in or out.
One mre hatched today so I have four now out of six eggs she is still setting on the other two so I asume they will hatch two.If they don`t by tomorow night should I take the eggs away? She has food and water within reach and has taught the babies to eat without getting up,I have seen only three of them they are so tiny.
She had pushed one egg out so I told dh I think I`ll candle that and if its no good then I`ll get rid of it and candle the other and if its no good do the same so I brought the first one in and pulled the blinds so I could get a good look at what was inside and I bent down to plug in the candler and I hear peep peep and I hurriedly took it back out and put it under mama. This is a long ordeal she started the 13th and still has two to hatch. If its peeping it should hatch within the next few hours right?
It hatched now one more to go
It's full of awe and wonder.
I remember when our chickens hatched their first chicks. They were good mothers. Whenever the chicks got cold they'd just run to mom and climb up under her wings. There she'd be with little chicken toes sticking out under the edges of her wing, and she'd be walking around with them like that!
I watched a baby chick get a drink one time by sipping the dewdrops off of the grass blades. Pretty neat.
