Have buddleia Evil Ways

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Never been able to root buddleias but I accidently broke off a branch tip earlier in the season and I hated to just chunk so I just willynilly stuck it in a pot of potting mix and Wah-La! It took. It even had a couple bloom stalks on it. Small,in a 4 inch deep perennial pot and it should be well rooted by now.Would trade for same size, well rooted cuttings/plants of:sambucus "Madonna" or a blacked leaf variety, cotinus "Golden Spirit, deutzia"Chardonnay Pearls" or in my wildest dreams a mexican dogwood.

I always keep a pot of soil in the greenhouse so when stuff like that happens I just tuck it in. About 2/3 of the time they take.

I've TRIED to root buddleia before and it's never taken. This one was just a fluke ...guess because I wasn't expecting it to....LOL

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

That certainly is the case .. I've come to the conclusion that sometimes the best way to garden is with negligence and indifference!

I seem to have better luck now than when I was a newbee gardener/grower. Lots of folks say they talk nicely to their plants ,pet and coo over them but I tell my plants"Oh,so ya wanna act like that? That's ok,there's many more in the greenhouse waiting to take your place so just keep pushing your luck"...LOL

I came,I saw,I planted and I have slain many..he-he!

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Lol .. I usually tell them "you're on your own".

Well,I really really took good care of those impatiens I trade with you for but even with all my TLC,I just finished off the last one last week :(

Mine had a really hard time this summer in the greenhouse and lost one of the mother plants .. They seem to like much cooler weather making me think they'd be better off in an air conditioned house.

had them on the patio...lost all but the one I started from the tip of the plant I broke taking the plants out of the box. It did real well then started to decline so I put it on a light bench in the house where it continued to decline and finally died.

What? Is that your looking for in trade? Not that I want to trade mind you ha ha. Just playin with you. I can't believe you got that to root, i've been trying my heart out to root cuttings off mine forever now, have rooted 3 and the rest died on me, I hated loosing them.

I'm gonna have to look your wants up ha.

are those the black leaved elderberries? your talking about?

I have a black leaved one, have never tried to root any , do they root easy? I may have to try that LOL

I got that new tiger ?? sumac suppose to put off runners like mad, I love the new variegated and bright chartruese colored bushes.

I'm thinking I need to move my black lace elderberry to full sun?

not meaning to take over your thread, but do they belong in the sun?
or shade.

I'm affraid to go look up your desired plants, cause I might want them too LOL

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

OH good grief, I just looked up your plants, I got the golden spirit, dang thng is in the shade, I'm goin g to go move it to full sun now. it's so tiny.

Love the deutzia"Chardonnay Pearls"

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Do you ever purchase from bluestone, I do when they have their 50% off sale. usually in the spring,

you can get your pearls plant there when they go on sale 50% off.

If you can't trade for it.

the buddleia or the impatiens?

I know what you mean about looking at someone else page....make my wihlist grow....LOL

It's raining today so I'm inside running between housework and surfing the web and wandering into a whole nest of "I gotta have um" plants. You should see the Looooonnnnnggg list I have writen up now. I'm going to have run to the local papermill for several boxes of paper to make my wishlist that grows by leaps and bounds when I stuck inside for the winter.

that sumac is probably Tiger(s)Eye. I got one as a bonus plant earlier this year from one of my regular trading buddies.

I got the gold leaf elderberry several years ago but had it in too much shade...moved it fall of '07 and it took off like crazy and was beautiful gold in the spring...lost some of the gold in the summer but seems to be brightening back up now..

And here I am being all optimistic that I could take cuttings of Buddleia x 'White Eyes' and be successful rooting them. Should I still give it a try or just forget about it?

I hear lots of folks say they have no troubles at all rooting their Buddleias. I must be holding my mouth wrong LOL

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

LOL After doing a little snooping, it makes sense that the best time to root Buddleias is in March or early Spring. Guess that makes sense since they bloom til frost.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

That's when I have the best results too

Does anyone have advice on rooting my buddleia. Fruit of t V, I see where you say to do it in the Spring. I will give that a try. I just found out that's the best time to do the abutilons also. Thanks for the advice.

This is my first time having success w/ a buddleia and it was totaly a quirk. It was in the spring when I put it down though so maybe that's the key because I did nothing else but stick it ina pot of potting mix. I have better luck w/ buddleia seeds.

My best time is in the spring also, and with the newly sprouted green branches
