How or whether to prune

Rockport, TX(Zone 9b)

Should I prune the gaura (the pinkish stuff) or the esperanza, and if so, when and how? The gaura is quite tall now. Will the esperanza want to break if it gets too big? It almost doubled in size during 2 weeks when I was away in August. It is a real beauty.

Here's another picture.

Just for the heck of it, here's a picture of the way the bed started out. We took out the bulbine and the plants outside the bordered beds.

That looks really nice, I don't see the need to prune.

I think I would leave it alone, pending what mother nature does to it this winter.

Well around here we have to cut those down in the winter, because they die down to the ground.

Thank you! I appreciate the advice. Esperanza doesn't die back here. Don't know what happens with the gaura.

You are lucky, our Esperanza doesn't come back many years, so I usually carry over some plants in pots to be sure I don't lose them all.

I'm with Josephine -- the plants are beautiful. Do you see butterflies on the Gaura?

Oh, yes, butterflies love that area - the duranta and gaura especially. I hadn't thought the gaura would get that tall. In the back behind them, where you can't see them, are Gregg's mistflowers, and the butterflies like those as well.
