when does the fruit come?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

I now have 2 different varities one is still tiny cause I just received it and the other is large and has been flowering all summer but I have not seen any fruit...Is this because it is grown in the house in a large pot?

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I'm pretty new to passies myself, but a lot of passies will not self pollinate, though some will. I'd like to get a list going as it would be helpful to us beginners. Yours may need to be crossed in order to reproduce.

well I just got a new one yeasterday...I'd like to grow it on the same trellis as the other one cause I think the 2 different flowers together would be awesome

And this is the new one I just got yesterday a Blue Eyed Susan

I sure will...I think they smell wonderful...my jasmine is doing pretty good too.... but I don't know much about it either...still learning

trinawitch,

The x-belotii is a hybrid of P. alata and P. caerulea. So it needs to be cross pollinated to produce fruit, and it may or may not be easy to cross pollinate. The Blue Eyed Susan I think is a tetraploid, so it normally will not set fruit unless pollinated with another tetraploid. I have tried to pollinate mine many times without success. But, it produces an incredible bloom, and is my favorite. It is a vigorous vine, and I think you should consider a seperate trellis for it. It would probably also need some supplemental light to bloom indoors.

The entire front of my house (east windows) is glass...I get sunlight from sunrise until about 3...seperate trellis ok...ooohh put one at each end of the plant room...that would look cool....I really don't care if either one sets fruit just wanted to make sure I didn't do something wrong

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Wish I could grow more plants in my house, but the kitties, Barney & Fief love to dig and nibble.

I have a chupacabra (really she's a chihuahua) that eats everthing, the bottom 1 to 1 1/2 feet of all my plants are missing their leaves cause she eats them the rubber trees, the Big ficus, the elephant ears, dats, brugs, oleander...and not once has she got sick...then again she ate half a walmart bag full of habanero peppers and then got mad at me when I caught her and took them away

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Lol .. lucky you! Anything green and the kitties barf .. it's a day to celebrate when they barf on the linoleum in the kitchen .. it's usually the rug. Actually the kitties barf no matter what .. it's just something kitties do.

i had a cat like that, she liked to follow me in the garden and lay under the bench...but i had a nasty neigbor who refused to tie up her big dogs...kitty was with me but I had to go in for something, neighbors dogs killed her and did about $600 in damages to plants early this summer

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Oh no! That's horrible! Did you confront the neighbor? Did she apologize and offer to pay for the damage? Every city and county have animal control laws .. if those dogs are still running loose you probably need to call animal control.

My kitties are strictly house kitties .. their paws have never touched grass .. a neighbor made a kitty veranda for me .. it's the closest they get to the outside .. they love it.

she didn't say a word at all...even after I screamed at her...then 2 weeks later she actually walked them with leashes...well she let them run through tear up the bench, and knock over a 7 foot dinosaur statue, and tore up a bunch more plants, she just sauntered off as if nothing happened....we've called animal control so many times, but she always managed to get them inside and then pretend she wasn't home when they would knock on her door...she finally moved

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Whew! Glad she moved .. hope your new neighbors are better!

X

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

sweet ha! someone gave her to my 87 yo grandma, they told her this pup was 5 weeks old, but she was actually only 2 weeks old!...then grandma had a heart attack...and decided she couldn't handle the puppy so we got her

and well this is her normal state

I am doing the happy dance! My new passionflower that I got on saturday Is already starting to bloom! I can't wait to see it....and everyone said I couldn't grow them in the house. HA!

Sorry I'm just a little excited...even my mother told me I was nuts for thinking about it and it would never work...well now I have 2 growing in the house...Yeah for me! LOL

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Well done! Post us a pix!

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

As soon as it opens up fully I sure will...I just love the smell of these...and they are so pretty...I wouldn't mind having a few more different colored varities!

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

okay another dumb question...how do they set seed? and if they do how do I collect it...or do only the ones with fruit set seed?

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

The seeds are in the fruit. Just like you see in oranges, apples etc. Once it is ripe you can dig the seeds out of the fruit and let them dry. I just happen to have a picture of some passiflora seeds and fruit.

You can see some have dried .. some still have a bit of pulp on them and some are clumped together in pulp.

well then I guess since I don't know how to pollinate or what ever I will have to deal with propogation by stem cuttings then huh?

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

This may help
