My hibiscus that I planted this spring are getting a little leggy. Im sure I need to prune them back, but they are loaded with buds. Are there any threads or websites that anyone can steer me to that show me how and when I should trim these plants back to make them a bit fuller? I hope I can wait until these have bloomed out.
I need some maintenance help
There are a couple threads in this forum with some advice--I don't have time to look for them now but if you scroll down a page or two you should find them. You can wait until you've enjoyed some blooms, but the trouble with hibiscus is if they're happy with the weather they can just keep on blooming, so at some point you have to make the choice that you're going to sacrifice some blooms and cut them back if you want them to have a nice habit. I would be careful though--I don't know what zone you're in--if you're in zone 10 then this doesn't matter, but if you're in 8/9 and plan to leave them out for the winter, pruning can stimulate tender new growth which can get zapped by frost easier than more mature growth, so you don't want to prune them too late or else you could run into some trouble with that.
Thanks for your help, Ill search for the threads. Im in 8/9, so I certainly dont want to stimulate new growth. I save feed bags so I can put them over them in case of frost, dont want them too big.
You could always do just half of each plant (every other stem) at one time so you wouldn't be missing all of the flowers. Then cut the others back when they finish the next round of flowering.
