Leafminers and yellow sticky traps - looking for advice

Spring, TX

I found lots of pix of plants with the same problems as I have with my tomatos and beans- trails that seem to be inside the leaves, caused by leafminers. I understand that the flies can be repelled with oil treatments, and also have read that yellow sticky traps are effective. If you've used the traps, I'd be interested in whether you found them effective.

I'm concerned that they might attract butterflies, and I have a lot of butterfly attracting plants in my flowerbeds.

Any advice you might have would be appreciated!!!

Renton, WA

The only luck I have had in repelling leafminers has been to use reemay cloth over the plants. I lay it over the bed at the time I plant either seeds or starts. This will keep the leafminers out of the soil. I usually pull it off once the plants are bigger. You can purchase reemay through any gardeners mail order company. I sympathize - I have had many a chard or spinach plant destroyed by the buggers.
