What to do about the dust in the coop?

Bridgewater, ME

Now that it is colder at night I shut the windows up most of the way and when I go out in the mornig to let the girls out its so dusty in there from them scratching around its hard to breath. Now that can`t be good for the chickens to breath either. This winter when the windows are closed tight it will be worse,I do have ventilation up next to the ceiling and the vents will stay open unless it gets below zero and the wind is blowing.Others must run into this what do you do to keep the dust down.I have pine shavings on the floor.

I'm new to this too, I've also been closing everything up at night cuz its getting cold. When my coop gets too dusty (I also use pine shavings) I've been lightly spraying the floor with water., then stirring the shavings up with a rake. It seems to work fine. Just make sure that the surface is dry after you stir. Others may have better methods and I'll also be watching their responses :-)

Thanks I will try that.Could always use a watering can with the sprinkler on the end of it in the winter time.

I use a little spray bottle that is intended for indoor plants. You really want to spray LIGHTLY. Just enough to hold down the dust. From what I've read, a wet coop is much worst for your chickens health than a too dry and dusty one.

I used alfalfa. I couldn't stand the dust... so I put alfalfa in there... they could pick at the leaves for protein and still keep the dust down. ?
