Message from Melanie's Youngest Daughter!

Kittrell, NC(Zone 7b)

Hello everybody!

I just wanted to post a message up for everyone and tell ya'll that the reason my mama has not be on in the past few days is because Tuesday Sept. 8th, she had a heart attack. She is doing better and she is expected to return home tomorrow around lunch time. The artery infront of her heart going down was at least 90% blocked. The doctors were able to insert a stint. She wants me to inform ya'll that she can't wait to come home a get back to her flowers and start chatting with ya'll again.(I sure can't wait either. I can't keep a plastic flower alive...lol). We are greatful for everyone's prayers and concerns.

Jessica

Hi Guys....I'm home!! Thank God!!!Still very weak. But I had to come and say thanks to all of you. It has been one scary week, that's for sure. I went from no meds to about 10 a day. I am still badly bruised and have burn marks on my chest from the paddles they had to use (I forget the name). I never had high blood pressure or anything that would indicate a heart problem.
You know you have it bad when everyone's running around like a chicken with their head cut off, (I was transported to Duke Hospital). When I got there, they had four doctors and five nurses waiting for me, I was checking out the little cups. My CC nurse stocked me up. LOL!! That's when you have it bad!!!

Oh my goodness! Your guardian angel must have been working overtime:) Your family must be so happy and relieved to have you home! Have a wonderful and peaceful weekend.

Jim, Jessica would have done you proud!! She had everything in the frige, watered just right. She is my awesome child. She knows how much these leaves meant to me. She even had a list made out so that I could see what I had.
Thanks so very much!!

Yes, I think you were blessed in so many ways!! So happy you are back but slow down and take good care of yourself......there is no such thing as a 'little heart attack' the doctor told my niece recently.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

Hi, jmp!!
I almost ordered the black matting from John cook last week but stuck with the white Troy matting.............I know a lot of people who use the black one........your plants look great!!

Charlottesville, VA(Zone 7b)

How scary, Melanie....I 'don't know' you, but so happy to hear the outcome...many, many good wishes coming from me...! ( newish to AV's!)

Glad to see your home.Take care.

Gail, that isn't matting. It's Strathmore black pastel/charcoal artist grade paper. For drawing on. I found that my plants leaves were all turning down and trying to cup the sides of the pots....someone told me that the undersides of the leaves were trying to protect themselves from the reflective white surface of the countertop - that it was too much reflected light. They suggested I put something dark down and put the plants on top of that....since the paper was all I had at the time, I figured it would do. And it worked.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

OK>>>>>>I thought you had bought this...............kinda wish I had bought this kind.......

VATTEX F CAPILLARY MATTING

forwatering African Violets and all indoorplants. Bottom drain pots placed on thematting will absorb water and nutrients.Synthetic fibers covered with blackperforated plastic 48" Wide; must bepurchased by the yard.
Less than ten yards - $5.50 per yard

This is from the Cape Cod catalog...............I use the Troy white......

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

Gail;
I bought some black cap. matt from charlie's greenhouse as they had it on sale, well it is nothing like the green matting i got from them before, the green is soft & absorbs water right away, the black is terrible, once it gets dry, it takes forever to get wet.Just be careful of what you buy.

I just use old acrylic blankets,

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks so much for telling me, Bonnie. I will stick to my soft white acrylic blanket I cut up plus my Troy felt like material from Cape Cod......I didn't want to order more than 10 yards from Cape Cod so I will still have to keep cutting on my Walmart blanket.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

i really like my cap matting, & i can wash it & use it over & over again.I think i paid like 59 cents a yard from charlie's greenhouse & have had it for a few years noe. i just cut it to the size of my trays & thats it. it's really nice. here is a picture of a piece.

That doesn't even get fuzz like mine does that I get from Cape Cod...........I will have to look at Charlie's Greenhouse. I forget about him.............. Thanks so much1

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

So far all I have tried is an old yellow blanket. It seems to work fine. The main thing to remember is plants on white matting will receive more light. For lower light plants, like maybe Episcia, use a darker color to absorb the light or place them further away from the lights.

Lynn

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lynn...........I have always kept the episcias on the highest shelves without much light or in an east window where they don't get but 2 hours of morning light...............

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

I think that's good for just about all of them, although I think Cleopatra prefers a little more light (for me anyway).
