hi every one . this june i planted a lotus bog . heres what i ended up doing to cover the lotus liner . it was a trash to treasure project . so my dh says i want to make a water wheel for you . yippee but it cant go in the lotus bog .... dh says oh well we will just make another one then.....
my water gardening progress.. graduating to a fish pond
of course we are doing this wo planning so the broken tile was all i had laying around to hold the liner. it is temporary till i figure out what im gonna do . i put the gravel in to show the ledge , and my black ranchu that will be going in there . i didnt want him to blend too much . i really want a callico ranchu and some orandas . or ryukin
Very nice. I did the plate thing around my back beds about 4 years ago. Had to take them up as the yard crew broke at least one a week with a weedeater or the lawnmower.
My neighbor made a sign to go over them that said "Great Wall of China".
Is that a real fish?
Christi
im afraid to let dh over there with the weed eater . im gonna have to cut the grass by hand there . i m so happy with this pond . it will be great once its all in place . my brother and dh worked 2 days on that house and wheel . the wheel wouldnt balance right . it took some tweaking . i love the sound it makes . very relaxing.
that is a real fish . he is a ranchu . they are a type of goldfish from Thailand ,japan and china . ive been keeping them and orandas on and off since i was 10 . i think this is going to be strictly a ranchu pond they are tougher than orandas i think .
that ranchu is about 5 inches and ive had him for 3 yrs .

Very nice. How many gallons is your pond?
from the calculations i did on a website, to figure out the size liner i needed ,it said 500. but there are shelves and narrower parts so its less than that but not much less . it is thigh deep on my dh whos 5'11
I love it, I love it, I love it. It's charming. I liked the plates too. They make you smile. Nice environment for the ranchu. I don't know what your winters are like. Will you take the ranchu back into an indoor aquarium for the winter or is it OK to leave them outdoors?
from everything ive read its seems ok as long as they are fed properly and have a good fat layer . our ground dosnt really freeze here . and as long as the water dosnt freeze solid they are ok . im sure ill be out there checking for a while . and i will keep the tanks running just in case. they are cold water fish and are raised in ponds in japan and china. if i were further north id be a bit worried though .
its not done yet hes shellacking the wheel now . im gonna stencil garmons mill est 2009 on it . then the landscaping .
iris, What a pretty pond. Such fun a waterwheel, I like the Lotus bog as well. Isn't it nice having a handy hubby.
Very whimsical! Love that first picture of your ranchu-he looks like he has metal teeth in his mouth.
Is that taro I see growing in the pot? I'm wanting to grow some too. And some pickerel weed.
well its just an elephant ear but thats almost the same thing isnt it . i need some ideas for a plant that can be planted on the side and drape over the side floating on the water . is there such a thing ?
creeping jenny is nice for planting by the pond and having it hang over into the water, or plant it directly in the water and let it go wherever it may.
Great recommendation jlj. I second the Creeping Jenny (Lysimachia nummularia) It loves to be around the water and if you have any rocks the roots can cling to, it will happily scramble over them. I cut mine back substantially every fall because it is vigorous and can be invasive in certain situations. It regrows quickly in the spring. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/677/
very nice!
