Need advice here

Crestview, FL

Apparently, this past Spring when I planted cukes and then melons, the squash bugs flocked to my yard. My melons are a sickly yellow color now and I'm getting rid of them, as their growth is stunted, I notice this is spreading to my peppers and eggplants also. I bought some malathion to spray; but, will it work on squash bugs, and hand picking them is not an option here, I need something that works, they have congregated to the front yard now and are attacking my canna lilies. I just spent $41 on fall veggie startings from a local nursery which I was going to put into earthboxes tomorrow (red and green cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce; along with startings I have grown myself of beets. Is it safe to plant them and will the squash bug leave them alone?

Thanks. I called Crestview nurseries and they said to go ahead and put out my startings tomorrow and then just spray with malathion and that will take care of the squash bugs. I will do that and then treating my canna lilys which are looking quite sad lately with systemic in the front yard, then I'm planting my companion plants to ward off the bugs for cabbages, broccoli, cauliflower, beets and lettuce. Busy day tomorrow.

Thanks, Joy. I've got some of the same veggies growing as you (cabbages and such), and it's great to have ideas on good companion plants for them. I do have rosemary nearby and just planted some nasturtiums. I've got radishes and basil in pots -- maybe I'll just go set the pots out in the garden!

LiseP: I am going to use plastic bags that have holes in them for drainage and set them real close to the plant I'm trying to protect from insects and diseases this season, I wanna try it and see if it works before my favorite season gets here which is Spring and time for maters.
