Have you successfully gotten rid of skunks?

How did you do it?

We have on in the yard up by the house. He sprayed last night and it was awful! We do have a hav-a-heart live trap we could use but really don't want to empty it. :) Is there anything we can put down to make him go away? We think he was after the hummingbird sugar water. We're going to take down the feeders today and put them away for winter since I think the hummers are gone now. Maybe that alone will help. We're good about picking up the dog waste but maybe we missed a bit here or there. I'll scourt the yard for any. I really don't want him making his winter home under my deck.

I do have on hand a gallon of shampoo for the dogs for skunk spray so if that happens I'm prepared.

What would you do?

I spray the yard for grubs. They are looking for them and when I get rid of them the skunks go away and bother someone else. You can live trap them, put a dark cloth over the trap when you have caught a skunk and put the trap down into a rainbarrel, pulling off the cloth at the last second, and drowning the skink. That way he doesn't have a chance to spray.

Thanks. I'll look for the grub stuff. If they didn't stink so bad I wouldn't mind him hanging around since they eat grubs and mice etc. I'm just afraid he'll spray my dogs.

i just let them eat all the grubs in the lawn

they sure do some digging damage!

Had the live trap set for a raccoon bird raider. Caught a nice rabbit with his friend looking in at him. So cute. Let them go. DH set the unbaited trap by the garage and forgot to put it away.

Next morning there was punk skunk in the trap. (I have seen this one before, he has super long hair in a punk do, with black and white fur between the white stripes)Had a skunk once before and did the sheet over the trap thing. It worked great.

This skunk was having none of it. He sprayed 3 times. Let me tell you, you cannot breathe, there is no longer air, it is horrid and you dry heave trying to breathe, or in my case, laugh my butt off. The situation was too funny. I documented the adventure with pictures. Too bad my new camera will not download to my computer. I would love to show them.

Skunks do go after grubs, birdseed on the ground and my favorite ground bees nests. That is the only reason I do not mind them around.

If I didn't have two dogs that I know would chase him I'd leave him alone. I don't have any birdseed or pet feces or garbage laying around. I did set the hummingbird feeders on a little table to clean and put away and that seems to be what he was interested in. One was laying on the ground. I've since washed and put them away for winter. Maybe he'll move on now I hope. I see no evidence of him digging grubs anywhere.
