Although this was a different bird, I think this might be the same kind…

Looks to me like a chipping sparrow, Mrs_Ed.

The 2nd one is a Chipping Sparrow, not sure of the first one.

Lake Forest, IL

The first one is lacking the dark lore and eye line typical of the chipping sparrow-even a juvie usually shows some hint of an eye line. Does have a greyish rump though...hmmmm-could be a grey form immature tree sparrow, not sure...

I don't have any head on, but here's a bit more of the head.

Now that look's more like a Field Sparrow, but fall color changes may be starting also.

Well Field would be a new one for me, so that's what I'm hoping. LOL.

I looked at your bird and then the Field Sparrow at

http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/id/framlst/i5630id.html

and

http://www.sdakotabirds.com/species_photos/field_sparrow_1.htm

and I'm still not sure what yours is. The two wind bars seem to be missing on yours.

And I'm pretty sure the sparrow in question is not a Chipping Sparrow.

Scroll on down above web site and you can compare it to a Tree Sparrow or Field Sparrow.

Burd said it may be some kind of juvy and that makes sense to me.

Well that pic would have helped earlier! Definitely looks like a grey form field sparrow to me...

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Yep, agree with Field Sparrow - note the pink bill and no dark line through the eye
