Great pictures of the hollyhocks. One of my favorite flowers. Next year will be my first garden here in KY so will post pictures of my hollyhocks at that time. I can hardly wait. I'm used to gardening all year in central Calif. Now must get used to how to garden in Kentucky.

Has anybody seen 'The Watchman'? It is the Ficifolia form of Alcea nigra. Very interesting!

early_bloomer, fantastic coloring on the foreground HHs! And the leaves... So well divided!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

DMg -- do you have those?? I think I got some seeds in trade last month... i will have to look but the name sounds familiar.

(Daniel) Mount Orab, OH(Zone 6b)

Well... I might... I am in the Piggy Swap and I think I oinked for some seeds for somebody there... But I don't know:( When the box comes in Febuary, I will know if I have to come to DG to get some, or I get to do some more of my favorite thing, dissemination of plants!!!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Let me know if you DONT get any... i'm sure i have enough to share.
and I think Ella will have the boxes out before Feb... hopefully early Jan. She usually spends the holidays getting things ready to ship.

(Daniel) Mount Orab, OH(Zone 6b)

Will do...

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

I have a bagful of HH seeds. They were from my double rose and double white, got them mixed together, unfortunately. They were really pretty this year. I had a bunch of them that I ws last year and they bloomed this summer. I was not expecting that!

(Daniel) Mount Orab, OH(Zone 6b)

Sounds like your gonna have a peppermint colored mix!

Happy New Year and Blue Moon!

Skimper,

do you start your plants from seeds.

sue

Greenwich, OH

cedarcottage,
I started my h.hocks from seed.
I have wintersowed my h.hocks, direct sowed in soil late winter and early spring in March.
I just barely cover the seeds underneath the soil.
These methods has worked for me.

Gorgeous everyone!

All hollyhocks are beautiful! They are the one flower that transports you back to childhood. I started mine from seeds a neighbor gave me a few years ago. I never know if the colors will repeat the next year.

I call this one Hypnotic. Stare at the bright ring of color :o)

I have hollyhock seedlings that have come up where I don't want them. I have in the past weeded them out, but I would like to save them if possible. Can they be transplanted easily?

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Rosy -- i think when they are small, they are easier to transplant. I'd think once they get that tap root, they wouldnt like it so much.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

I agree!

(Daniel) Mount Orab, OH(Zone 6b)

TOTALLY!! They just won't live if they are transplanted with more than 4-6 leaves (about when the taproot starts growing long).

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Daniel -- thanks for that additional tidbit. I try to get them in their 'spot' while still quite small. and have not had to move any yet... but if i get a lot of seedlings this year, i just may try to move some.
