I planted several young hibiscus this spring and early summer, and have gotten a few blooms on them. Now that its "fall" (as fall as it can be here), the plants are loaded with buds. Im thinking in a few weeks Im going to have a wonderful display. Is it the age of the plants, or is it the fact that its not getting above 90 any more?
Whatever the reason, I cant wait to see multiple blooms on these young plants.
Is it timing or weather?
It could be both--my larger hibiscus definitely bloom more than the smaller ones, but mine all tend to bloom more when the weather's warm but not super hot. So it's probably a combination.
You've probably got some time yet before you have to worry about the weather being too cold--I'm only a half zone warmer than you and I don't usually put mine in the greenhouse until about Thanksgiving so I'm sure you've got at least another 4-6 wks of outdoor time. And unless it's so big you can't get it into the house, there's no reason you have to cut it back before you bring it in, if it's already got buds and you can give it some bright light it could continue blooming indoors.
Thanks, It is not too big.
The ones I cut back were at least 6' & were always blowing over in the wind. The 1st three I cut are already really filled out & blooming better than before. It was sure hard to cut the blooms off so I put them in pots with pea gravel & put them in my fountain & they are still blooming. Flowers are smaller but I'm shocked that they are putting on buds & blooming at all. But, yours don't have several years growth so you have a lot different situation. Love to see pictures of yours when the buds open.
