I THINK this is a Downy Woodpecker judging by the spots on the tailfeathers? I always have trouble with the Downy and the Hairy Woodpeckers.......
CLOSED: Downy Woodpecker????
Not to sure, Downy's have a short bill and Hairy's have a longer bill. Yours may be a Hairy, its look's like the one in my field guide.
I was having a hard time comparing the bills BF, thus the reason I went to the tail feathers. I suck at IDing birds! *sigh*
It is a Downy woodpecker...note the tight short bill (for a woodpecker) and just an overall more 'compact' look.
Aside from the bill proportions, this photo shows the spotted outer tail feathers of a Downy Woodpecker very clearly...
Yep, the outer tail feathers give it away. It is definitely a Downy WP.
If it were a Hairy WP, the outer tail feathers would have been all white (no spots).
Ditto to Downy!

I was actually right for once! *THUD* Thank ya'll so much, I really appreciate it! :) I'm closing this one out..........
Wow! the Hairy is larger, Ive never seen one...I,m sure I would notice a 9 inch long WP that would look like a Downy, a new one to look out for!
