Who was looking for a yellow av?

Atco, NJ

I read that someone was looking for a yellow av but now I can't find the thread where I read it. I have Chantaspring if that's one you are looking for. Just let me know.

I can't believe you can make Chantaspring bloom and look nice. I have tried her twice and both times she looked ragged..........you just share your av 'secrets' with these tiny trailers............

She is so pretty, but I have never tried growing her.I seem to have trouble with teeny tiny Persian Prince and Fairy Fountains. They bloom, then look like they are dying and slowly recover (so far).

So far I have had good luck with both Chantaspring, Persian Prince, and Persian Princess. I really think it's the amount of light more than anything else. All my plants are wick watered. I just experiment with the placement of certain plants under the lights. Some respond more to the middle of the lights, some to the ends, and some do better off to the side a little.

OK, Pat.........let me take a picture of my Little Chippery Trail and you tell me what they need to look perky and happy. They don't look 'bad'.........they just keep losing foliage underneath.

Little Chippery Trail is a very small plant with tiny leaves. My first thought is that your pot is too big and maybe they are too wet because of that. Mine get no special treatment but are in about 1 oz. cups and wick watered in the same trays with everything else. Because of the darker foliage I keep it toward the center of the lights. Other than that, I don't do anything special to them. The pot in your picture looks like it has at least 3 plants in it. I would put each plant in its own little pot. You saw the picture of my plant on the Sept. picture thread. It's very full and bushy looking, but that is just one plant that branched out. The cup is full of roots. I could be wrong, but I think it's just over potted.

Hi Laura,

Would you like Chantaspring? I don't know if you were looking for a particular plant. But if this one will do, I have a starter plant ready to go or leaves if you prefer. Just let me know.

Thanks so much, Pat. I always over pot minis............when will I ever learn! I have always grown mainly standards and semi minis so I think I can put everything into a two inch pot. Will separate all of them tomorrow and put in tiny individual pots. You are right in that they stay way too wet......
Then I will look for all the mini trailers and put them in smaller pots.......so they don't stay too wet....

Thanks so much for good growing advice...........I have never potted anything in a one ounce condiment size pot but I have zillions of them (LOL).........I think since there are some roots in there, I will try the 1 1/4 ounce condiment size for each of them..........

Pat, when you come back will you say what size a very mature mini is in at your house? I always thought the goal was to keep them in no bigger than a 2" pot when they were very mature plants? I don't think you have a 2" pot that I have seen. Yours look fabulous!!

Atco, NJ

I have a few planted in 2" pots but most are in 1 1/4 oz. Solo cups. Like the ones Fred uses. I keep watching the 2" pots and thinking that the plants look overpotted. I find that keeping them in the smaller pots works for me. Sometimes I just trim the roots a little and repot them with some fresh soiless mix (equal parts of perlite, vermiculite, and peat moss). I think the 2" pot keeps the plants too wet with the wick watering.

I know you are right!! Now for the joy of repotting for the second time in a week the very same plants (LOL)

Atco, NJ

I know you were looking for the 1 1/4 oz. Solo cups. Were you able to find them at one of the party stores?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I stopped by Party City in Corpus Christi when I was over there this week. Lo and behold.......there were 125 to a package and made by solo ........3.49 each package. I got 3 packages to start with..........and I bet I can order them on line somewhere, too.

The shipping is less expensive for me because of the gas to go somewhere an hour away to buy them...........

Hi Bonnie,

I think your plant looks just beautiful. I'm certainly no expert, just doing what works in my situation. If I had that much potting mix showing around the sides of my plant, then I know with wick watering it would remain too wet. That's why I prefer to start with smaller pots and move up as needed.

I know there are guidelines to follow, but I think we need to allow for all the variables of our own growing situations. Maybe I could adjust the potting mix to control this better, but since it's been working so well I'd rather not. We tend to have very humid summers here. I think that makes a difference too. I have to run a dehumidifier in the house all the time. In cold weather I have to run a humidifier all the time. My growing environment changes from season to season. We all live in different parts of the country and the growing environment has to be a little different for each of us. Otherwise, we could all do exactly the same thing and all have perfect results. Like sharing a recipe!

If we keep sharing the ideas that work for us, then we keep learning. That's my goal, to keep learning from everyone out there.

How many crowns are in there, Bonnie? She look great, but my club president keeps fussing at me for using more than one crown to make it fuller.
