Setting-up an mp3 player

Has anyone set up an mp3 player lately? Am trying to help a teen friend fix his. He got it over a year ago, could not get it to work, so put it away in the closet. Now he wants to use it.

I have charged it up for more than six hours, but it will not hold a charge. Music has been installed. It will only play when it is attached to the computer. And that kind of defeats the purpose of a portable device, huh? Any suggestions, please?
