Hardy Hibiscus.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

I have a hardy hibiscus, it is pink. It bloomed but no pic., no seed. How many varieties of hardy hibiscus are there and can we grow them from seed.? Does anyone have a Yellow one? that they would (if there is one) that I could get seeds from? Thanks for the help.

There is a yellow, but I don't have seeds...

Thank You for the information. I really appreciate it.

no problem.I have an Old Yella plant which is not doing well at all...no where near seeds but if that ever happens... :-)

Sometimes plants just don't want to co-operate.
Do you ever take cuttings after they bloom.? I was thinking og taking a cutting from my pink one.

Emerald Hills, CA(Zone 9b)

I just took some cuttings of this one and am trying to root them. No idea if they will take but I'm giving it a shot. This plant is also not doing the best; no where near last year's vigor but at least it bloomed :-)

Yes, mine only had one bloom, same color as yours. They are very pretty. I think I am going to try to take a cutting and put the peroxide in the water to see if it will help it root.
I read about it in the brugs and hope it will help in the other things as well.

the advise is to leave the old stems up in the winter. If you cut them off water can get in them and the roots will rot. I cut them off when new shoot come up in the spring.

And I would love to get my hands on that yellow one!!! Never seen it before here.

And I am getting seeds in this one too! I pollinate some flowers by hand and they get good seed. The rest of the buts fall off.
I have never heard from anybody here in the Netherlands they get seeds of this plant. But I think it is best to take rootcuttings from this plant.

Hey, Dee, that is really unusual with the yellow bloom & I had no idea they got that color. Got seed one time & sent them to a friend in Pa. Don't know why it happened but was thrilled with the seed. Haven't tried to root cuttings but will be interested in seeing how that turns out. Keep us posted.

Is it a pale yellow, like in the picture or a darker one? It is a raetty one.

Emerald Hills, CA(Zone 9b)

Pale or not...I wouldn't know as I haven't seen it bloom :-) I'm still struggling to keep it alive

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Oh, I am so sorry. I misunderstood you. I guess it doesn't make any difference if it dies. I have a unhardy one that is battling with life also. It had bugs, I sprayed it and it looks awful, all the leaves fell off and now, it looks like it might try to keep on. I see now, where you said"it wasn't doing well" I hope it gets better for you. Sorry I put my foot in my mouth. Might call it"hoof and Mouth" disease. :--)

Well, I guess Old Yella isn't doing as bad as the rest of my young hardies. Hard to keep track of them when they are sitting in triage.

Are you putting yours in the ground, Dee?

When I first got these 4 inch pot sized plants in early spring I put them in the ground but they were not happy where I had them. I have since dug them up, put them back into pots and moved them from full sun to partial sun and they are coming back. I had 4 3 gallon sized plants in the ground but one died over the winter. So far the other three are showing varying degrees of growth. One is huge and blooming a lot, one is medium sized and has bloomed a few times and one is smaller, has yet to bloom and was the last to sprout. They are three different CVs in the same bed but the late bloomer gets the least amount of sun. Perhaps that is the difference.

Mine that seemed to bloom the best was in morning sun, afternoon shade & all of them wanted water....a lot of water. Going to try some seed next year. Would love to get seed from mine. Don't think they like the extreme heat we have had this year. (I didn't either.) Got yours & Deb's MFV rooted. Will send y'all an email.

There is one variety of Hibiscus that is hardy that I'm aware of. I live in zone 4, Wy. I grew H. moscheutos 'Disco Bell' from seed 3 years ago. It finally bloomed now when it is receiving full sun. It is 2ft tall and bushy. It is full of buds and the flowers measure 7" across.

I started another from seed in March. It has lots of buds and I'm dying to see what color. Hopefull it will beat the frost.

Hi ridesmule,
I have this one if you would like some seed. Not sure if it is hardy or not, would think so. Especially for GA. This is the first year I have planted it, has done well from seed. Still blooming!

oh, I love it. I have some white seed a friend gave me, wanna swap?
Send me a d-mail. They are a nice mellow yellow, aren't they?

Kerkdriel, Netherlands

Blomma, the one I have showed earlier is hardy. It comes in different colors en yours is one of that.

GAgirl1066 your picture is Hibiscus Manihot (now called abelmoschus manihot I believe) and this one is not hardy.

GAGirl -- if you have extra seed for your yellow hib, I'd be interested as well. I have a red hardy hib, and red hib coccineus seeds on hand to trade. I need to add more colors to my landscape. I have so much red and green, it looks like a Christmas farm in the summer. LOL
