We now have 7 of our 12 pullets laying eggs. I guess we have seven since we've been picking up 7 eggs every single day. This morning we broke some for breakfast and two of the eggs were double yolkers! I was pleasantly surprised. I have no clue who's doing double duty but it has to be two of them since we got two of the same kind in one day.
I just had to share. We sure are enjoying our chickens.
We worked on their outside run today. After reading some of the sad stories of animals getting to chickens and killing them I thought we should secure ours a bit better. We laid down the hard wire fencing on top of the ground all around the outside run and then hubby took the tractor and scooped into a hill of clay and dumped that a foot high or more on top of the fencing all around the pen. I hope that gives them some extra insurance against predators.
We're still putting lots of garden veggies in for them to eat. Maybe it was all the cabbage and broccoli that helped make those double eggs. I don't know. They sure have shiny feathers and look beautiful.
Double Yolks
Way to go Loon: Sounds like you and hubby are securing you girls very well. It's always great to see folks taking precautions before a problem so that there is not problem. Fun stuff to see the double yolker huh, Paying you guy's back with interest. LOL. Thanks for sharing. Haystack

One of our eggs got broken in the hen house today. I don't know how. We picked up all the mess in hopes the chickens wouldn't try to eat it and decide they like to eat eggs. That would be a disaster.
Hubby just picked up 5 more eggs. That makes 9 eggs for today plus the one broken one. WIth a dozen hens that means ten are now laying and only two slackers. :) They turned 20 weeks old today.
hi
that is good
what are you going to do with all the egg
elle
We use 6 eggs each day for breakfast. The eggs keep for many weeks so when I see there is an over abundance I'll boil some up for egg salad. We love egg salad. After that I guess I'll learn how to make a quiche' .......... after that........maybe give some to family or friends. I don't know. Haven't thought that far ahead yet. :)
Good thing I sold 10 hens to the neighbors. I know I couldn't get rid of over two dozen eggs a day. I go to visit them. I felt bad when that old rooster mounted my hen and was pecking her head hard. I know that hurt. As soon as he got off she ran away fast. I don't have any roosters but if I ever decide in the future to get one I'll get him as a chick and have him debeaked so he can't hurt the hens. That's just mean.
I posted this awhile back about freezing eggs:
Here's the link on how to freeze eggs, it says they will last 1 year in the freezer:

I love those double yolkers. We only see them when a hen starts to lay, and then later on they grow out of it I guess. I'm jealous!!
hi

Elle - it sounds like they are not all laying yet. In time, you should get nearly 1 egg per day from every hen.
We're getting about 9 eggs a day now. They seem to all lay at different times. That is going to be hard in the winter hauling out to the henhouse to pick up eggs three or four times a day before they freeze. Any ideas on how to get them on a laying schedule. :)
We just collect at the beginning and end of the day (about 7 am and 5 pm). Our coop is its own little building and we have a ceramic panel heater in it, but no other heat. I very rarely had eggs freeze except on the very coldest days. I think the egg cycle is roughly 26 hours, so no, there isn't really a way to get them on a schedule. For "daily" layers, they lay a little bit later each day, skip a day and then start over in the morning of the next day. Also, with the shorter day length, you are likely to get less eggs unless you provide additional lighting. We don't do that, in part to give them a natural rest that their bodies would take anyway at that time of year. I find they start to pick up again in Feb/March. For a few weeks in January, we had no eggs at all last year, out of about 50 hens.
Thanks for that information. I guess we'll be buying eggs in winter but that's OK. Our chickens are in a stall in the barn and there is a smaller coop inside that stall. We put a heat lamp out there and when it gets colder we'll have two heat lamps going. I hope that's enough for them. We have about a foot of straw down on the floor. The floor is cement. I've thought about putting a window on the west side in there to allow sun to come in and heat it up a bit naturally.
Wait and see. You may not be buying eggs; your lamps may provide enough light to keep them laying through the winter.
