Can you help please

Ligonier, PA(Zone 6a)

Hi here is a photo of tropical plants. I know #1 is red ginger and I think #2 is some kind of bromeliad but I am not sure. #3 is some kind of palm, do you know what kind it is?
Thanks.

The bromeliad is Aechmea blanchetiana and the palm is an Areca palm.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

#1 is Alpinia purpurata, I wish I could grow these here!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I'm totaly in love w/ that aechmea blanchetiana. In what garden zone is Santa Fe TX? Yours looks like it loves its outdoor location.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

the palm is a butia or pindo palm as they are called.Sometimes called jelly palms too.

Kyle :-)

Not an Areca? Duh...

Ah vossner I only wish this was my yard. This is a photo that was taken in Hawaii. I do have a lot of tropicals or I use to before Ike and this horrible drought. I live in 9B

I hear ya.

We can grow a lot of Bromeliads here. The island (Galveston) seldom freezes and off the island is a lot of micro-climates. Buildings and concrete really can raise the temperatures.

So the palms marked #3 are called pindo palms?

Pasadena, CA(Zone 9b)

Sorry, but the palm is commonly known as a Golden Cane Palm, the Latin name is Dypsis lutescens.

Duh ! my bad..I didn't look at the trunks only the crown, its NOT a butia or pindo. They have recurved leaves like these but have a solitary trunk. Junglemans right on the name.

Thanks. I wonder if you can go them where I live in 9b right outside of Galveston, Texas. I would love to have some in my yard. I know the description says it can grow in 9b.

Pasadena, CA(Zone 9b)

Well, they love humidity and warm temperatures. They are a frost risk, but with proper protection, you might be able to winter them through! I am growing some here in 9b (though Pasadena actually leans toward 10a).

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Aechmea grows all over here...even up towards Vocano Z9 (I think)...that one is especially striking in the full sun!!!

Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

The Aechmea are fairly common in the warm parts of Florida. You can mail order them if you really want one.
